Where did you workout (ride, run, etc) OUTSIDE today? (2023)

I lived there for a while about 20 years ago. Running in St. James’s park never got old.

A mate I hadn’t seen for ages messaged me a couple of weeks ago asking to come out on our group gravel/mtb ride today. Only thing was that I gathered from the silence on our WhatsApp group last night that group would be just me. I have things on my mind and was thinking about bailing but as there wasn’t likely to be anyone else turning up to meet him I forced my self out. I’m glad I did.

Out of that wind it was quite mild, I hope it was for you too!

Incredible! Amazing story and result!

I can’t believe they organize this the same weekend as Street Vibrations (the motorcycle rally). Geiger descent is dangerous enough without thousands of drunken motorcycle riders buzzing you.

I don’t think I could walk up that final climb after that many miles. It’s tough even when fresh. Chapeau to you!

I think this was the first time they fell on the same weekend. From what I can tell sweet vibrations is the last full weekend in September, typically the 508 has been the weekend prior to that. I’m not sure why that didn’t apply for this year🤷🏻‍♂️

A little belated, this one - more a ‘where did you ride about a week ago’…

Went to play in the N. Wessex Downs, borrowing UKCE’s ‘Magnificat Tour’ route, joining and leaving it either side of the stretch of B road out of Wantage, and lopping of most of the southernmost loop, which would have taken me down near Andover and made it cool 150 miles or so.

Managed to survive various things that seemed to be out to kill me:

  • a roe deer, that came charging out of the hedge, slammed to a halt and reversed direction only just in time
  • a tree, down across the near half the road as I came around a downhill corner, with loose branches covering the other half, so that I had to tiptoe around in the mud where the road disappeared into the verge
  • gravel, covering the road on the approach to another downhill corner, that threw me off line and nearly into a deep ‘gutter’ - fortunately nothing was coming the other way, because I ended up on completely the wrong side of the road on the exit
  • a red kite, which took off when I surprised it, and being hemmed in by high hedges on both sides, flew right at me as it tried to gain height.

Also about a million young pheasants that seemed determined to get themselves killed by running around aimlessly in the road.

All good fun and games

I think I’ll be scaling back the distances on the long rides from hereon into the year, what with the light closing in. A bit of a shame, as my ‘outside legs’ seem to be coming back to me - felt a lot stronger and less fatigued on this one than the previous couple of efforts.

Crosswinds!

Gone back in time

Yesterday I escaped the trainer and took my usual ~3 hrs of endurance out on the road. Keeping things as flattish as I could reasonably manage so that I could roll along fairly easily, this was a pretty nice route, skirting the Chilterns and then winding back through the villages south of Oxford.

Donut Warriors Sunset Ride last night, after 6 days off the bike to visit my daughter in Phoenix and celebrate my nephew’s 26th birthday.

Lots of migrating birds have arrived at the preserve:

According to BLM, “The Cosumnes River Preserve is home to California’s largest remaining valley oak riparian forest, and is one of the few protected wetland habitat areas in the state.” and “The Cosumnes River is the only remaining unregulated (undammed) river on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.” and “Nestled in the heart of California’s Central Valley, The Preserve is a critical stop on the Pacific Flyway for migrating and wintering waterfowl. Over 250 species of birds have been sighted on or near the Preserve, including the State-listed threatened Swainson hawk, greater and lesser sandhill cranes, Canada geese and numerous ducks.”

Now you know!

Leaving the preserve we had a quick regroup:

And then back along some crappy pavement on an old county highway:

See how friendly (most) drivers are here!

Forgot the most important pic from last night:

The smell of the grape harvest and crush are heavy in the air, love this time of year!

Ride Complete 2023-10-02

Garmin gave it a solid tempo rating:

While WKO gave it

  • Aerobic 6 (out of 10) or “begin to place the aerobic system under enough
    strain to produce adaptation”
  • Anaerobic 8 or “Workouts in this range have high impact on the anaerobic system, will typically result in over-reaching, and will elicit adaptation.”

And a 90-day average power best for 122 minutes.

Today is definitely an easy endurance day!

Legends of the fall :maple_leaf::fallen_leaf:. Stunning fall scenery in the Colorado mountains.

My ride on Sunday incorporated some of our more technical downhill trails. Warming up for this weekend in Moab. Whole Enchilada is on the cards.

I had an hour long SS work out tonight but I decided I wanted to do it on the rural bit of my commute. So I selected a 30mins alternate (30mins being what I could easily fit in to the rural part of my commute) but that workout was the same as I did last week. So I selected a 45mins workout instead, Carson -4, hoping the warm up would get me off the cycle paths onto rural roads it did. Ideally I wanted to finish the workout before I went down the hill that leads you to town, but I didn’t and the road was total chaos (probably because a lot of folk were avoiding the rail strike chaos). So instead of turning right into town and the chaos I turned left out of town to finish the workout before doubling back to the chaos. Lol, With a heavy bike and laptop over a moderately hilly route I was 16.3mph but by the time I had navigated the 2.5miles of chaos it was down to 14.7mph.

Tired to ride my bike yesterday, no go. 3 rather large hematomas in my right quad, felt like they were gonna explode at the top of the pedal stroke.

Went for a walk today, I’ve never injured myself to this extent before. 0 out of 10, do not recommend.

lol at first skim of your post I missed the -tomas after the hema- and thought you needed preparation h after all the cycling you’ve done lately

Everything but my right quad is 100% ready to ride! it’s driving me bonkers, I’m just hoping I don’t loose too much muscle mass with all this damage.

hear ya, a few months ago I got an infection from a bee sting on my quad. And that was “just” an infection and not a more serious injury from a fall.

Is that do not recommend for the hematomas, or for going for a walk?

The hematomas  Although I would have preferred to be on a bike instead…

No pics so it didn’t happen, but ran over to the grass track a few klicks away and put in some intervals.

Wish I did it more regular
