Happy Pi Day!
A short trip to San Luis Obispo:
A lot of word plays in this area… eat sLocal, drink sLocal, SLO down, and then there is my daughter’s Slome on Find My Friends ![]()
Like Dorothy at the end of the The Wizard of Oz, we closed our eyes, clicked our heels three times, and repeated “there’s no place like Slome, there’s no place like Slome” and 4+ hours later were transported back to a simpler time… SLOtime.
My daughter has been here almost 7 years, and will stay at least another year. With the whole famdamily gathered we finally rented Trek eBikes for my wife and two girls, and I got to show them my ultimate SOUL RIDE from my trusty Tarmac:
LOL, yes we literally had to dodge falling down drunk, green haired college students at noon. As my nephew likes to say “I remember my first beer” LOL. Seriously we saw a lot of dyed green hair falling down drunks. For Cal Poly students it is THE party of party days, or rather, party daze LOL.
Once past the drunks and dealing with a cyclone force headwind, we turned off the highway and onto a peaceful road that climbs up Prefumo Canyon in the Irish Hills of Los Ossos Valley:
Nice climb up Prefumo Canyon followed by steep 10% descent down upper See Canyon (and I would have turned around sessioned See Canyon if by myself) :
The short 1.5 mile dip between the two peaks is a dirt/gravel road. Here is the summit at around 1400’ elevation:
The woman in the white helmet and her husband (he already passed) are from British Columbia, they spent a month mountain and road biking in the area. The car was a couple of college kids having a picnic. Met another retired couple on eBikes from Arroyo Grande. Had some nice chats with cyclists while my family took a load off their sore butts and snapped pics of the nine sisters that are strung along the valley between San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay.
Up a little higher took a pic of Morro Bay rock:
Its a series of 9 volcanic plugs from millions of years ago:
And all 9 sisters:
Stunningly beautiful area on the coast, very charming and everything is seemingly 10 minutes away.
The gravel connector between the two canyons is filled with these lovely tree canopies:
Then its a 1.5 mile screaming -10% descent down the upper section of See Canyon. Here is what my watch had to say about the descent:
The fam followed my instructions and rode the brakes down - it is covered by trees and the narrow chip seal road has mottled sun & shade. Definitely not a fast descent until you’ve done it once or twice, and even then there is rock debris on the road.
Once past the steep section there are orchards and wineries. We had to stop at a winery after kiddo#1 turned her head to look at an apple orchard and ran off the narrow road.
Minor scrapes on her side. A parent never stops worrying about their kids, even when they are all grown up and responsible adults ![]()
Then back to SLOme and past cycletribe:
and their words to live by: Mind. Body. Bike. ![]()
All over town the tallest of the 9 Sisters - Bishop Peak at 1559 feet - dominates the skyline. Great for hiking if you are ever in the area.
Oh, and I forgot the theme song, kiddo#1 went to CRSSD (https://www.crssdfest.com) last week so its my favorite House/EDM band Sofi Tukker:
with a side of Drinkee:
for all the St Patrick’s Day revelers ![]()
