Where did you ride OUTSIDE today (2021)

It was the inter club TT tournament tonight. I normally can’t make it but WfH has some positives. Although maybe I should have recce’d the course. My clip in was terrible but after that it seemed like it was going ok and I was catching my minute man by about 4.5miles. I stupidly followed him through a narrow gap however, to bypass a whole load of tumble strips. To make the corner at the speed I was going I went a bit wider than him and then decided to recreate Stefan Bissiger’s TT moment, fortunately with the same outcome. I was a bit more conservative after that. Just when I was getting my nerves back there was another left but a large SUV must have obscured the signs and although I turned correctly, I wasn’t sure I was on the right road :roll_eyes:

how are you getting your “effective CdA”? Have you a pod on your rig?

It wont be 100% accurate (probably not even 75%) I use my MyWindsock and back input my average power and adjust its CdA value until I get the same time as the TT segment.

Nice day for a bike ride.

PC-2021

My outside ride today was as usual on a Thursday, the club TT round Southey Woods. I was quite pleased with how tonight went. I changed my fueling strategy and drank I had a quick pasta microwave meal before I went out whereas I usually only have time for Soreen bread before a TT. What a difference it made my power was back to where it was. I never went flat out as I raced last night and have a 20.8 miles open on Saturday and it felt like there was more to give on another day.

Not on the ride but I got back to this flying low over the rbt near my flat but lol, by the time I got parked and walked back they were disappearing into the distance :joy:

Edit: Lol, I’m as blind as a bat when it comes to reading the phone screen with my contact lenses in and I added 1mins to my time. I corrected it :joy:

Oh man! What a morning! I’ve been popped by hotwire and it can really hurt! Sorry about the tumble, too! The loose baby goats and cows are too cute. Glad you had a lovely run on Sunday. Even the rifle ranges there are beautiful!

Local fire abatement crew hard at work!

Apropos of the goat team and my (Southern) California roots, it took me a few years, but I no longer automatically refer to any wide trail in a forest or on ridge line as a “fire road.”

My first time trial since 2017!
I did it in the Merckx category since I haven’t been riding in aero recently for anything above endurance watts (and my TT bike has not been off the trainer since August 2019)!

The big positives for me were coming in ahead of my seeding estimate AND not being overtaken. Lots to work on too. This is a weekly series alternating between two locations so I’m hoping to get plenty of practice this summer.

Tour de France coming my way!

Luckily, someone else being in the French Alps during the Tour de France, while I‘m stuck with Zwift doesn’t make me one bit jealous… :unamused:

Watching the tour rom my couch now while the storm that is dumping on the tour is now on us as nearly the entirety of Switzerland is covered in rain per the weather radar (with a bonus of “moderate danger” thunderstorms tomorrow). However, this morning I did get out for a TR outside workout, Fairweather+1. This is notionally 5x15’ threshold jumping between 85-105%. I wrote “notionally” because I tapped “back” to redo workout bits several times due to traffic and once to stop for a lakeside pic as I was in the middle of a village that forced me to go super slow.

This is the flatist route I can muster without riding circles. Of the 1775’ of ascent, 20% was in the last 1.75mi to ascent from the lakeside to home.

Approaching the old city of Rapperswil.

A lakeside pic after wandering into a village center that forced me off my pace. There are fake fins in the water to emulate sharks(?) and water fowl hanging around who don’t care.

Slowdowns were traffic lights (generally rare, most were rounding the top of the lake through Zurich and down the NE side of the lake, sometimes cars, and sometimes other riders.

Some little fiats traveling en masse (more out of sight ahead and a couple behind me).

July 1 - closed out a gross 4-month stretch at work (the “tail end” of COVID has been the worst!) by “celebrating” Canada Day with a 215km solo memorial ride for the #215. :orange_heart:

My longest ride ever, both time and distance – 215km/7.5hrs/5,000kJ @ 72%.

Was prepared for a scorcher (we’ve had insane temps up here :fire:  ) but was met with 60% cooler conditions, which was probably a good thing. Felt surprisingly better than I thought I would (4hrs of sleep!). Think I got very lucky with my position as it’s usually less than perfect; almost no aches or pains.

First couple of hours I just toodled around but then decided to employ a TT-type strategy: go hard when conditions are hard (hills, headwind), go easy when conditions are easy (downhill, tailwind). Seemed to have paid off? Last 30mins were a bit of a struggle but ended providentially.

Other observations:

  1. carbo loading is a disgusting practice.
  2. now that I know I can do a 7hr Z2 ride…why bother with a 2hr ride?
  3. was immensely liberating to get off the trainer and ride OUTSIDE!
  4. riding for something is a lot easier than riding to something.

Indeed. Next up, Double Century!

A short test ride for me today… although, I think I’ve settled on the upgrade to the disc brakes, which means the Skeiron model. First time riding Ti and loved it!

Note… pedals not mine :upside_down_face:

A short ride from me this morning to meet some mates for a coffee (I drove 3/4 of the way as storms were forecast and I wanted to save my legs for the afternoon TT.

I needn’t have bothered it’s been completely dry all day and the afternoon TT rouns Southwick, Northamptonshire was weak. The start at the top of a hill with a sharp bend and getting stopped by the marshall at the next for a phantom car didn’t help but the bigger factor the humidity got to me and my power was down 52w from Thursday night

Iowa Gravel Classic 100k.

Course time of 3:55.
62 miles
5,500 ft of elevation gain.

was a good day, Think I got 4th in the Open Men category.

Short one today before the family BBQ and planned 80-100 miler tomorrow. Prior PR on this loop was 22.5mph I believe, not much traffic today so it helped but still very happy with the speed here. Also picking up lots of participation trophies lately :raised_hands:t4:

A social ride for me today up to the Rutland area where we met other folks. We were a bit late and had to step it up for a bit to get to the meet point on time but apart from that it was the recovery ride I needed :+1:

Yesterday, was a beautiful day here. I got my bike back from the local bike shop a few days ago. New brakes, new chain, new cassette… rode around in the neighborhood to bed my brakes, but hadn’t had time to take it out on the trail until yesterday.

So much fun. Brakes worked so good. I practiced slowing hard in the straight parts and being brave on the turns. PR on a little downhill segment that used to scare me because of the switchbacks and poison oak.

But soooo dry out. I am worried about fire season this year. We are in a drought.

They recently installed water troughs for the cows who graze in the park. I always wondered where they got water.

My bike shop also washed and waxed my bike for free because they are the best shop in the whole world. We saw two other riders out and they both complimented my bike. I guess it looked pretty sharp. I should have taken a picture of it when it was spotless!
