First bigger road ride headed to my favorite roads outside of Philadelphia, lot of rolling hills I think I did well considering I gained a few quarantine pounds. Snagged 2 KOMs and 10 top 10s, always a pleasure
I’m going to admit right up front that the only reason I’m posting my morning workout today is to complain. It was -3C this morning and I’ve had it with the cold mornings. I like the cold but it’s now spring and it’s time to move on. That’s it, that’s my rant.
Seen animal bingo: cats (as in house cats roaming… both were spotted in a “frog” zone and… there were no frogs
), a deer clearly walking toward me on the path until he wasn’t, and a fox on the path until she wasn’t.
Sunrise as I head home. I didn’t see a single runner, walker, or cyclist this morning.
That’s because it was too cold! Ha!!
Seriously, though, great ride and thanks for the pics!!!
First real ride yesterday. Still tweaking the fit, need to schedule some time with my bike fitter. Waiting on some parts for the new wheels and converting my Enve 5.6 discs to SRAM.
Just lauf’ing around! A little play on words ![]()
First practice crit of the year, in this pic I’m the guy on the back (I feel like I look huge compared to my buddy ahead of me in Gray), 30 minutes social warmup and then it’s everyone for themselves till 7pm + 3 laps. I decided to try and break away on the second hard lap knowing I couldn’t do it myself hoping someone would help, but only one guy chased later and by the time he got to me he was too tired to help, and so was I, so I ended up finishing mid pack on the sprint at the end cause I suck at positioning I always end up towards the front and at the end as well when I’m too tired to sprint properly
Forgive me @Brennus and @Joelrivera for I have sinned ![]()
After sticking to the zone 2 plan I headed back towards home and hit the 2 mile southbound stretch back to my neighborhood.
The first mile was roughly 180W and solidly zone2. Then the second mile… what can I say? It’s a new bike. The Amazon delivery van in the roundabout made me slow down so I motorpaced for 100 feet exiting the roundabout. Needed to figure out if moving from 50 to 46 big ring gave me enough gear. What will I tell my coach?! ![]()
Cheap KOM on a notly contested segment ![]()
Theme song:
N-1 aka one bike to rule them all
Those colours!
Oh my!! That’s one nice looking bike.
She’s a beaut. Makes my Original paint scheme, which I describe as Swiss
, a bit boring. Nice job on the KOM and 4th.
Dashed out for a quick ride this afternoon at 5p. Bib shorts and a thin long sleeve for the 14C weather. I have not been able to retake my FTP test (waiting for replacement rollers from mfg), but it seems I’m due. Today felt good and though I pushed it, it was not 1.04 IF for 52min.
A daytime shot where I frequently see a badger on pre-dawn rides.
A short pause to pull a branch out of the chain so a pic.
Part of the last climb was on road. As I passed a roadie (I jumped on the sidewalk), he asked (in German) if my ride was an e-bike. HA! I said no with a big smile.
I’ve had a couple of weeks off the bike as I’d either strained a tendon or the cartilage in my knee had slipped. Either way it’s been bloomin’ painful, I’ve even needed to take painkillers to go to sleep, the last time I did that was when recovering from my hip replacement.
Anyway it’s been a lovely spring day so decided to push an endurance workout outdoors as I didn’t want to put too much strain on the knee. Settled on Polar Bear -3 which is two hours indoor or out.

No power meter on the MTB so rode by RPE but Strava’s estimated power showed me a bit low but I’m not sure if it accounts for off-road surfaces, the on-road segments were within a couple of percent of target power at the same RPE as the off-road segments.
I arrived back home about fifteen seconds after the workout ended so pretty good timing ![]()
Ate a couple of cake bars which amount to 35g carbs per hour so need to up that a little but also need to figure out what level of RPE I begin to struggle with ingesting food.
Saturday’s looking fine so I’ll find another endurance/tempo workout to do some more testing particularly on the food front.
First outdoor ride of the year, and my first ride in Trondheim! This was supposed to replace Brasstown or Boarstone or Beehive or something so I tried to keep my heart rate low and mostly failed up the hills:
Jonsvatnet is still iced over despite the warmer weather this week. I heard some funny noises as we rode past and thought my helmet strap was flapping in the wind, but hubby informed me no, that’s ice melting.
It was a little muddier (and icier?!) than I was expecting on my 32mm Conti 4-Seasons. Can’t wait for the bike cleaning in my very near future ![]()
Today’s outside ride wasn’t interesting because of where I rode, so much as the fact it was new power meter day.
After more than 5 years of indoors power, first from my Vortex (ahem) and then my Neo 2, I was missing it when out on the road. After a lot of dithering and almost going for some Assioma Duo pedals, I decided a 4iiii Precision crank arm is good enough for the likes of me (52 and overweight, never gonna race). At least for now.
It does mean I have mismatched cranks though. The new R7000 is a lot nicer than my old 5650…
(They look different lengths from that photo, but they are both 172.5 - I checked three times!)
To test it I did a loop that I did last week. Just 25km that fit nicely into my lunch hour. I was pleased to see that the power tracked closely to what I’ve had indoors this year.
A little lower, but it’s a sample set of 1 versus an average over 40-odd Zwift/TR rides.
It was comforting to find that the weighted average power (228W) was close to the average estimated power from last week (230W – although raw avg today was 19W lower at 211W).
Last time was a 13kph NW wind, today 36kph WSW. So a bit more to push against, which may have had some impact on the power numbers. I dunno, I’m not a power boffin.
Only managed a 986W peak, agonisingly close to the kW. But I’m not used to trying sprints outside so maybe next time… ![]()
Anyway, I also nabbed a bunch of PRs and a 10th overall (out of 500) on one segment. All in all, a satisfactory ride. And now TR will stop complaining about new outdoor rides not having useful data. I CBA to fix all the old ones though… ![]()
A good club ride today and we ended up going up the hill where we averaged 32mph down (including a stop for temporary traffic lights). We were a bit slower going up but surprisingly not as slow as I thought (11.1mph if you believe Strava). Lol, we stopped at the layby at the top, to let it regroup, and the segment finishes at the other end ![]()
First outside ride on the roadbike since last September (or maybe early Oct) today.
I was planning on 2,5-3,5 hours of easy riding on my own. Got talked into joining some friends but only got minimal information. Figured it’d be 150-170 km, more then planned but they promised it would be chilled and include lunch.
Well, I was wrong…

Pretty early season still i Trondheim! When I lived in Östersund I would still be in full ski mode with the back country just getting really good this time of year.
