Why do Collins on the trainer when you can play on wet slick roots, rocks and in the mud with your friends…

@HLaB —maybe you are the strongest rider in the club!!! Way to get the most out of a gray day! Awesome!
What a beautiful view! Did you ride an XC bike?
Not much in the legs today, I didn’t expect it after a relatively strong ride yesterday. So I headed to Yaxley so I could do my training session on the flat old A1. I passed all the traffic lights and started my warm up and doh. I had my Garmin on the wrong profile with too many metrics on show. I switched to the correct profile and started my workout but quickly realised, I would be better off with a tempo session rather than the scheduled sweetspot session. Did the first 30 mins just below the sweet spot after that I switched to tempo. Got back and looked at the map, it appears I’ve drawn the map of a Skinny Italy ![]()

Yep! I’ve got my '21 Epic out here for the trip and rode in BV earlier in the week, Golden on Friday, Cañon on Saturday. Might try for some stuff near Boulder today if it has dried out a bit.
I must have caught him after a long shift. My endurance seems better than ever but at 45 I’ve lost that explosive burst; he usually has that ![]()
Finally the weather was dry to ride outdoors. It was a whooping 1C average, but at least not as windy as usually. Still felt pretty slow with the thick winter gear on. In the summer time (summer tires, deeper wheels, aero jersey, and generally better feel) I am usually 2-2.5kph faster on this course for hardly any more power.
Was still pretty positive to finally ride outdoors for a long ride. Kinda sick and tired of the turbo.
We had our first snowfall of the season. It started last night and, with only a few pauses, it continues now in the afternoon. Already it seems we had more snow than we had through the entirety of last season. Because of the meager snowfall last season, I never needed my winter tires. However, they are going on the bike tonight. I had some slippage in the snow today, something I haven’t since the winter before last.
The short ride started at 5:30a, due to a lazy wake-up and start, and lasted just under an hour as I need to be in the kitchen, barefoot or otherwise, making meals for the kids, not to mention making sure they (13 & 15) are awake before driving them, which took a lot longer today due to the snow. (They usually take public transport – train & bus – to and from school, but I’m driving them to, but not picking them up, as a minimizing, er as a kindness, gesture.)
My front-end setup. An Exposure Lights Mk 14 Race (2100 lumens) mounted below my Garmin with a remote control mounted on this side of the K-Force mount for my helmet-mounted Lupine Lighting Piko 4 (1900 lumens).
The glasses were a bit more clear during the ride. Obviously, they fogged up in this post-ride pic in the garage.
I abandoned a steep climb (18-20%) not because of slippage going up but, because my time window didn’t allow for the normal loop, I had concerns about coming back down it. Overall, an easy, fun time in the snow.
Oh, and I did fix the rear wheel to end the “resistance training.”
A beautiful crisp clear winters day here today. A bit windy but it was steady and about as good as you’ll get this time of year in the flat lands. I decided I fancied a bit of a change however, and loaded in West Vidette-1. I was going to make it a shorter loop to fit the work out but given it was
I went over the steeper side of the only real hill/bump in the area.
Yesterday was my last day of playing in Colorado before coming back to the real world. Snuck out to White Ranch outside of Golden before my evening flight.
Belcher Hill is 1700+ ft in about 3.5 miles of largely loose rock/baby heads - brutal but would make for a fantastic training hill. Longhorn is a super fun downhill that had me wishing for a little more travel and a little slacker frontend than my Epic, but was fun nonetheless. Got a little footage but no good pics of that.
Almost the same as yesterday I again did the outdoors version of West Vidette-1 on the same loop. The only difference was today was grey ending in misty rain and I had to stop for a hedge trimming tractor. Because it turned to misty rain at the end I kept the tempo up a bit rather than going for a sub 125w cool down.
First club training ride after the 2nd lockdown and six of us turned up. It’s more about the route than destinations but the route took us from Peterborough down to Brington, out to Alconbury then up the old A1 to Yaxley just south of Peterborough. The only thing of note
I equalled my time up the Brington climb of circa 7 years ago.
After a short search for two we’d dropped on the old A1, I went the long but flat way back to Peterborough. The moment I got back to civilisation the roads were packed with cars, busier than a pre covid peak. Expect a peak in Peterborough next week ![]()

Today was Global Fat Bike Day. We had snow at home yesterday but it had gone by this morning but I took a guess that the centre of the Dales national park around Ribblehead would be snowy and struck lucky.
If you are into railways then that’s Ribblehead Viaduct in the background.
Fairly fresh snow so quite a bit of pushing!
The Lake District on the far horizon.
Only 18km but it took nearly four hours! Here’s the Strava file - https://www.strava.com/activities/4433694588
I had no idea. I still rode my fatbike though!
Always the first Saturday in December.
Just looked at my Strava times: the main descent took us 1hr, my pb is 11 minutes!!! Everything was hard work.
Always fun when you have to pedal even on the downhills!!
I went out for a brief 90min ride in the snow this morning before going to a strength workout, mostly core, with the wife. One workout hurt and was not enjoyable and sucked, while the other was quite nice.
We’ve had more snowfall in the past five days than we had the entire season last year. As a result, yesterday I put the knobbies on (aka snow tires), which I did not need last year. Making today a ride to relearn how to ride in the snow and the right / a good tire pressure.
The snow was, at times, 3-4cm (1.5") or more. In other places, the snow had come off the trail.
I paused here to enjoy the view. A train soon passed which reminded me that I live in both a postcard and a model train set.
Overall, not a quick ride but then it wasn’t supposed to be.
