After easter 2021?
They simply donāt have the capacity to test everyone. Tests have been reserved for healthcare professionals and known contacts of infected people to get the most bang for buck.
Kudos to him for being out front on safetyā¦but frankly I have a hard time taking a medical officer for the most violent sport with a history of covering up health data seriouslyā¦
That saidā¦I dunno. His views might be prudent. But what are we going to doā¦have nobody work for YEARS potentially until there is a vaccine? I dont see that happening. Perhaps not holding events with audiences seems realistic though. Maybe that what he was referring toā¦
I feel like if these guidelines are still in place mid-summer bike races and viruses will be the least of our worries. People will be going absolutely insane. Especially in colder climates where people survive months of winter just to enjoy summer. Mental health will be a much bigger issue and people will simply stop complying. Especially in areas without mass infections.
My view on thisā¦and it is a total Wild ass guessā¦is weāve got probably about two more months in the US of it being a ^%}% show with everything shut down. Over the rest of Aprilā¦the rest of the idiot holdout states here will get their heads out of their asses and start real social distancing measures. Another month after that I think we will likely start to see a return to normalcy. If weāre smart, we would not hold massive gatherings with tens of thousands of people that could spark an outbreak large enough to put the hospital system on the ropes again.
Soā¦my guess is: no world tour level racing, no NBA/NFL/MLB for a year plus until there is a vaccine, or the world just says screw it and throws in the towel. Small potatoes type stuff, like local crits, and my chicrosscup CX series where participants and spectators combined are in the hundreds, not thousands, I think might get off the ground in 2, maybe 3 months.
I understand. My crony capitalist healthcare comment was meant to imply something similar. If health care workers are super stoppers, we are super spreaders. They are interwoven in a way. Iām reaching I know. Again, frustrated.
Word!
Agreed. And sadlyā¦my take is that this virus is just going to have to work its way through the population. It is soooo transmissableā¦I dont see how it will be possible to not have constant outbreaks without constant, stringent stay at home orders. And I just dont see that happening for a year. I think weāll likely see this current social distancing order through to stop the current outbreak, and then have some relaxation, but not so much as to let the virus boil over. I think the plan will essentially be to let it simmer. Whichā¦frankly kinda (really) sucks if youāre older or otherwise moreso at risk m in any way. I really fear my parents.
Virtual racers should consider themselves lucky. Just imagine being a pro whoās actual job it is to raceā¦having to resort to racing on a computerā¦and then being disqualified because said computer game isnāt designed for pro racing. The people who actually train for and get paid to race canāt race anywhere!!
No kidding!
That applies to about half the population right now I thinkā¦
Iām amazed youāre still flying around much. There are 2 Qantas employees in my street that have been home for a while now. (Iām setting one up with my spare trainer and a TR referral later today).
To be honest, I think youāll see things change rapidly in that regard. My government was dragging itās heels a few weeks back until they realised that was the wrong approach.
Itās not so much a matter of money when it comes to testing. Itās purely a matter of necessity until they get enough reliable tests and people to administer them.
All you have to do is chat to people working in healthcare to realise how limited resources are. Itās hard enough to get suitable masks, let alone enough tests to really get the data needed.
The fallout from this virus is going to be massive and drawn out unfortunately. Itās almost too big to comprehend.
Lots of road racing through winter in Aus though, handicap race series etc. But I agree, canāt see anything happening until 2021, even at the WT level. Maybe Worlds, but that would be a long shot. What year are the Worlds in Wollongong, 2023?
Do you all believe we will see any of the later May or June gravel races taking place, like Dirty Kanza?
Maybe CX this Winter, I donāt think road racing in Tas will go ahead until end of the year, carnivals time. Wollongong is 2022 yep. But with CNSW having almost no interest, Club racing almost non existent in The Gong, And with AusCycling vs CA this might be the time for some change. Who does the UCI recognise, AusCycling or CA?
Canāt see Oceanias going ahead this year in QLD now either.
If my first race back from this epidemic, is BayCrits, that would make me happy.
When the pros laugh at the results because they canāt crack the Top 10 in a race
Agreed. LBS was a dying business already. I worry this is going to crush most of themā¦
I donāt think the economy can handle more than 6 weeks of shut down. It isnāt just the US that is effected when we shutter our businesses. We fuel the economies of the world. The amount of foreign aid and support from doing business with us will hurt many other countries. Their health care systems will take a hit as most of them just cover the basics as it is. Iām not worried about a second wave of Covid next year. Iām worried about the number of deaths from cholera and other forgotten third world diseases if we donāt find a way to exist in spite of Covid. So biking may be effected, but as someone said, the vendors will really be hurt by this. Think of all the charities that wonāt get funds when we donāt race. Getting back to normal which includes racing has to be done sooner rather than later, or Covid will be remember as the catalyst of a much greater problem than the deaths it directly caused.
Lumberjack? Iām signed up for the Mohican 100 at the very end of May, but seriously doubt it will happen. There was a trail marathon at Mohican State Park in March that was cancelled, but it wasnāt the race directors controlling it. It was the state park itself. I could see the park being cautious when opening everything back up and the Mohican 100 being cancelled or moved to the end of the year too.
Not a chanceā¦and if they do, youād be crazy to participate. This isnāt close to being under control. See previous comments about being in close proximity to people spitting, blowing snot rockets and breathing heavy.
It would be insane to do any bike race or sporting event any time soon.
