No, 5 minutes is not that long and if it is a Tranerroad workout, than there is no”coasting”
No problem at all.
First of all, build up to three hours. Dont just jump in for a once and done.
The only real problem with taking a break is losing the will to continue. Once I start taking breaks I find I want the next break sooner, and sooner.
Better to get comfortable and stay the distance with a variety of distractions.
Just 3 hours for me but it was on wattbike in gym just staring at a wall with no entertainment. It was mentally tough! Not sure I want to do much more than that.
Would prefer an intense 2 hours and get more bang for my buck
I’ve done 4.30 a few times (including Hoffman today). I may have done 5hrs before, but definitely no longer than that. Anyone crazy enough to attempt V-Everesting has my utmost admiration - there’s no way I could do that to myself
.
I’ve found taking breaks to actually help motivation, but yeah sometimes it’s hard to start pedaling again.
I keep the water bottles in the fridge and use the break to fetch a new bottle. Near the end I might stop and dismount because my butt hurts, or rather, it’s falling asleep.

After a while I lost the will to quit, and at the end my girlfriend had to call it and drag me from the trainer

Crazy long time, I’d have to administer electroshock therapy to wake up my butt. ![]()

Actually, my GF convinced me to jump back on the mountain bike in the afternoon to go to a nearby lake with the kids so my butt must have been okay
It came on the back on a (for me) insane 1200km week preceded by a 800km week preceded by a 500km week, so I was pretty used to my saddle by then ![]()
I’ve got to work on rising up and taking pressure off, like I do on the road.
I always take breaks on really random numbers like “2:37:36” because it frustrates me when my ride doesn’t finish on a 15 minute increment ![]()
Ha ha, nice trick.
It works

I’ve gone somewhat unstructured this week for recovery week. I’m not doing the 2nd half of CX specialty so I’ve basically just been doing longer endurance rides than what the plan had prescribed. Yesterday did 2hrs z2 and today I did 2.5hrs z2, it definitely starts to feel long after 2hrs!
Not sure if there’s any benefit to try to build up to 4-5hrs in the next few unstructured weeks before I start SSB HV (like pre-base base lol), thinking about it though
This thread sprung to mind on another thread talking about an insanely long stint on the trainer. The longest Ive been on it was in the middle of the 2nd lock down. I created a virtual route over Teide and that took just overr 3h45m.
The longest Ive been in the real world is the 312, 12h40m moving (13h31m elapsed). Unbeknownly the upset stomach was caused by my growing bowel (colon) cancer so Im sure I wouldn’t take as long if I was to do it again.
Kailash is still my longest TR workout, but I also did the Virtual Kona Ironman on Rouvy during lockdown:
That was the fun part, the madness was the run after it.

Said about every Ironman, ever.

Sounds like you need to plan a return trip ![]()
