The post-race e-mail from the race director confirmed that I made the right decisionā¦even though it didnāt rain as much as expected, it sounded like it was just a miserable, brutal day.
I ended up going to Driftless100 with my brother, and you are spot on @batwood14. We really lucked out with the weather compared to the forecasts. However, it was a very challenging course regardless and had it stormed like forecasted, I probably would have DNFād.
Iām signed up for the 70 mile route (registration is free) ā and I think Iām about 70% sure Iām going to do it. A crazy heat wave would likely keep me out of it ⦠but other than that Iām definitely leaning towards it, especially since there will be aid stations this year.
They say itās not a race, and Iām sure that means there will be no podiums ⦠but you know how these things go
Riding with support, or at least having a bail-out phone call to make is the only way to ride the Driftless in my opinion. Rugged but beautiful spot.
I may have to sign up for thatā¦I have done several gravel rides out of Stockton, including a 110 miler last summer in brutal heatā¦some spectacular riding out there.
ETA - Lena Brewery makes some damn good beers and the food is fantastic. Definitely plan on going there after your ride.
The Coast-to-Coast is the only ultra-distance race Iāve ever considered doing.
And by āever considered doingā I mean that I largely have no intention of doing it, but I entertained myself for 30 minutes of a 3 hours trainer session by imagining that I would do it. Then I got off the bike and signed up for the Barry Roubaix 36š¤
Good luck in your quest. I heard last yearās C2C literally burned through entire drivetrains due to the wet weather + sand. Godspeed.
