Anyone planning on The Bear 100 on May 7th?
All the best,
Steve
Wife and I did the first round on April 9; Iāll be back for round 2! Very well-organized event and great courses w/ options for Short Track, XCO, and 3-Hour Marathon.
Just signed up for the 66 mile version of this race in the U.P. ā
Weather looks like for the Driftless 100 this weekendā¦seriously considering not going. Driving 4 hours to ride gravel for 9 hours in the rain and wind doesnāt sound like much fun.
Cool race, but 10 hours in a long drive.
Thatās a shame, Itās gorgeous riding there! Iāll be at Tour of Hermann this weekend, was sad to see I couldnāt make it!
Iām feeling the same way right nowā¦
Iām the same boat with a Driftless. I know the area is really cool to ride but the conditions sound like crap. It is going to be hard in the morning convince myself it is worth the drive.
That is a great race I did last year with a cool format. Plus, downtown area is cool to check out after the loops for the day are over with. Should be a great time!
They are now saying it will be warmer (62*) but thunderstorms and 15-25mph winds.
At least the 100 mile course should break up the time into the headwind throughout the day. Also with 9k+ of climbing, the hills stop some of the wind right?? That is what Iām telling myself.
With the wind coming from the SE, you are gonna be riding into a head-cross wind for about 50 miles continuousā¦from ~mile 18 to ~mile 68. But you should have a tail / cross-tail wind from there to the finish.
That isnāt helping my lack of enthusiasmā¦
Open Range Gravel Race this Saturday in Pratt, KS.
Will definitely be my outer limits, 200k, forecastā¦Sunny with gusty winds. High 73F. Winds NW at 25 to 35 mph. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph.
Portions of I-70 were closed today due to the wind kicking up so much dust on the interstate.
If it makes you feel any better, those hills will do strange things with the windā¦What you expect for a headwind might not actually be a head wind!
Not reallyā¦.
I have until midnight tomorrow to cancel my hotelā¦.waiting to see if / how the forecast changes.
Iāve grown completely comfortable with the realization that, in my mid-50ās, i am OK with not doing events that may be miserable. Iāve got nothing to prove at this point and I want enjoy my time on the bike.
Also, I signed up for the Gilmore Gravel Grand Prix on October 8th. In terms of location, roads, etc., itās essentially a Fall edition of the Barry Roubaix. If any of you did the Barry when it was held in the fall of 2021, it was picture perfect ⦠the first two weeks of October are generally an epically good weather window in the Midwest.
Between the Moran 166 (66mile version for me) and the Gilmore gravel race, Iām going to make those back-to-back weekends my āAā race block for the year. Iām still lamenting the cancellation** of the Cherry Roubaix
**Technically, the rescheduling and re-locating of the Cherry to different roads on a different date with a different format that essentially gutted it
Words to live by after this yearās Barry and RoughRoad ⦠the 28F temp at the start of the Barry took a piece out of me thatās never coming back.
The 37F temp at the RoughRoad was, ostensibly, not as bad ⦠until you climb out of the little valley onto the prairie and catch sight of the wind turbines as far as the eye can see, and you realize they didnāt put those things there because itās not windy
Yeah, so I am bailing on Open Range because of the forecast. If anybody wants a registration transfer, hit me up ASAP!
Anyone doing Le Grand du Nord in Grand Marais, MN? I did their āheck of the northā event last year and it was a blast⦠looking forward to some northern MN goodness at the end of the month!
