I’m glad Spring Break caused a conflict for me w/ Barry…zero chance I would make the trip out there for those conditions. Sounds miserable.
I will be there. I signed up for the fat bike class anyway, so this is a last chance for winter riding (glass half full). I have been off the bike for weeks with an injury. This will be my first big outdoor ride since it happened.
I’ll be going down that path eventually but receiving cartilage transplants later this year to give me another 10-15 years hopefully. What kind of restrictions on cycling do they have for replacements these days? Can you go full throttle after rehab? Trail riding allowed? Thanks!
Good luck to all those riding Barry today! Stay warm and have fun! Certainly am glad I decided to not ride it this year especially with the muddy mess I raced in last weekend.
I did the Barry yesterday and I’m still trying to warm up. I did the 36 miler, finished in the top 10% overall and Top 10 in my age group (8th), which were my goals. I made some mistakes which have left me with a bad taste in my mouth because with a few simple decisions and it could have been a podium. Oh well🤘
And … the rumors are true: it was COLD. 28F/-2C at the start. It snowed the night before after having rained the previous 4 days. The super fast track I remember from last October had devolved into a pothole riddled mud track. Such is spring racing in Michigan. Some photos below … my brand new Open UPPER performed outstanding, but I’ll be picking bits of Barry County gravel out of it for months
Props for doing it and doing well….
But nope, fook that.
Barry-Roubaix was Awesome! So beautiful riding through that snow. Great race, cool vibe, nice town, I will be back.
Definitely know how you feel! Pretty sure it will take me a couple months to get all the dirt out of mine from a race last weekend.
How’d it go?
Cold and wind and I don’t get along
Oof Barry was tough this year after my only gravel race experience being Barry last year which was totally different (dry and 65deg).
I knew it was going to be bad when I slowed to like 6mph on the each of the 3 sisters and then basically sprinting to keep up. Did a pretty good effort but the outcome wasn’t what I was expecting. 93rd overall in the 62 isn’t too bad though knew I was just a couple better moves away from being in a much better group.
How did everyone fair at RoughRoad? It was my first time, and while I get it’s always windy (hence the windmill fields) what got me most was the soul sapping power of the trail. I was looking forward to that 10 mile flat finish stretch only to find my legs disappeared upon entry.
Great event and met some great riders along the way!
Was quite happy to have missed it due to the weather……was driving back from FL. Not often I would rather sit in a car for 16 hours vs race my bike.
Kudos for getting out there in crap weather!!
Friend of mine did it on a Tandem with a buddy and averaged almost 20mph!
Whoa! That’s impressive. I saw a couple tandems out there. Well done to them.
I finished 2nd in the 64k race and got interviewed by Frankie Andreu at the end. Very cool day for me🤘
I wish they would start the race differently and segment the groups up, so it wasn’t an unidentifiable mosh pit of different racers in the same scrum, but that’s how it is.
The 10 mile “flat” finish is a deceptive, soul-sucker. It’s not gravel, it’s more like a forest trail … ??
Whatever it is, it hurts my ass and shaves 5mph (minimum) off your speed. It looks flat and firm but, man, it just grinds me down. When I exit onto the pavement I feel positively euphoric….
Rough Road was my 1st gravel race, and i might have overestimated my abilities signing up for the 100k, but completed it in under 4 hours.
This is the most accurate description of the trail sector I’ve heard yet. Well done on 2nd!
Iceman is already full. See you in November
