What are your unpopular cycling opinions?

Your argument sounds like the discussion on seat belts in the 70s. The government had to mandate laws to protect people from themselves. This is the same case and isnt fully implemented where I am but it is required in many places to ride. All bike clubs that i know in my area require helmets for any club activity or event. I cant ride in my bike club without a helmet. If under 18 you cant ride a bike without a helmet where I am. It really isnt an option if you want to participate in any cycling event.

t isnt an option for me not to wear a helmet and it shouldnt be.

Be smart and protect yourself.

I came to this thread to read some good unpopular cycling opinions. What does this one say? My eyes instantly start watering when I come to this post. It is almost like my subconscious is protecting me from possible trauma.

Bike geometry and fit are way overhyped than necessary; a few mm here, a degree there, doesn’t matter.

People say that standing around in bibs after completing a ride is a one way ticket to saddle sore town.

If that were true, wouldn’t it mean that biking for another ten minutes would have done the same?

I think it’s one of those things people just say.

And wrong

Perfect for the unpopular opinion thread. Cheers! I’m good. Very very busy with 7 months of work on an exciting project coming out as soon as the government allows me. :upside_down_face:

It seems some people just use this thread as an excuse to throw shade on (insert your favorite group to rag on here). Mean opinions are unpopular I suppose.

Personally, I think all cycling is pointless unless you’re using it for transportation, but that’s the beauty of it, actually. Like surfing is pointless. Music and art are pointless too. Why does everything have to have a “point”? Some things you do for the love. Nobody talks about intrinsic worth anymore.

Ah, it was a little bit of fun & definitely a tongue in cheek comment. Don’t take it so seriously!

The real idea was to deflect a bit away from the serious debate happening between a few other posters on the thread. I can see though that I missed the mark in terms of humour. My bad!

Have fun

I never have a problem standing but sitting down for longer periods of time, especially on a sofa, with no air flow is a recipe for them to grow. After a hard ride I’ve collapsed on the sofa several times only to wake up and find a sore has manifested :joy:

Your argument involved an anecdote someone slipping when taking the garbage out, banging their head and subsequently dying as a result of that head injury. Your implication (without evidence) being they’d have been okay if they’d worn a helmet Then when asked if you were a helmet during such an activity you say no.

I prefer to based my decisions based on the actual scientific evidence, not anecdote about activities that don’t involve a bike, such as taking out your rubbish.

Being smart is looking at the scientific evidence which is quite clear that bike helmets have no measurable impact on the risk of your suffering a serious head injury.

There is certainly no case what so ever for mandating anything. Wear one if you like, that’s your choice, and that’s where it should be left.

During the Lance era the secret sauce was supposed to be the high cadence aerobic climbing. For Pogacar, ultra exclusive, pinpoint zone2 riding.

But secret sauce by any other name is still that.

You are gonna need to provide a citation for that claim because….

Children who wore a bicycle helmet use had reduced odds of head injury in our population of children hospitalized after a bicycle vs MV collision. Head injuries were reported in 75% of the patients , yet the severity of the head injury was reduced among the helmeted children when compared to the unhelmeted group

Policies requiring bike helmets have been associated with long-term, sustained bike helmet use and a 20%-55% reduction in head injuries

Researchers at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration [1]
(NHTSA)found that helmets reduced the likelihood of serious head injury by 60 percent

I personally feel wearing a helmet is a personal choice…if you don’t want to wear a helmet, don’t. But don’t make false claims that can impact the lives of others if they choose to believe you.

Temporarily only it seems :joy:

My argument is there was risk on a bike with no helmet. Go check the science.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a life altering event. Helmets reduce that risk when you ride. Wear a helmet.

And for Chinese runners in “Ma’s Army” it was turtle blood and caterpillar fungus. Balco was a “vitamin shop.” The list goes on and on.

Titanium bike owners are the vegans or crossfitters of the bike world. Or maybe coffee snobs. They’ll never miss an opportunity to tell how ti is the best material out there or it’s the purest form of bicycling or “you feel one with the bike.” Carbon is king and looks way better.

If I napped on the couch post-ride in my bibs, I’d have to burn it. Forever unclean!
