What are your unpopular cycling opinions?

Vingegaard is boring to watch. There, i said it.

UNPOPULAR opinion thread

I’m just saying that cause whenever people are recommending budget bikes for new riders, they disparage xc bikes as if they are unrideable. My first bike was a Commencal Meta HT and then I had a new Roscoe 8, now I have an Epic HT (yeah not a budget bike, but still). The difference is capability is a lot less than I expected.

XC bikes aren’t as cool I guess, but your avg rider would probably have more fun on an xc hardtail cause you get to go faster. That’s what I’ve found in my own case at least. (this greatly depends on your local terrain though)

In almost every situation, I think a lightweight full sus XC bike is better than a hardtail. I have nothing against hardtails (I rode them for years), but if I can only have one or the other, I’d pick a lightweight FS XC bike

Well of course, but you forgot the situation when you have a thin wallet. The full sus options are 2x the cost.

The UCI have a really important role to play, and everything they issue is well thought through and of value to cyclists everywhere.

^^^ This surely deserves a thumbs up. Maybe some of these :clap::clap::clap::clap: too.

OMG!! I can’t remember how many years ago it was, but I test drove 2 different expensive Jeep models, and they just threw my the keys, so I went out on a slicker road I knew of, and tried hitting the brakes. The pull to the right was so pronounced in the first one, I honestly think I screamed a little. I did another, more loaded model, with the wife who loved that car. On the same road, the same thing happened, and we both screamed. I have no idea why the braking was so bad on those higher end Jeeps, but we didn’t buy one. It was as if the pedal went half way down, and then it locked up the wheels, as if the anti-lock brakes just freaked out and locked up!! The worst feeling brake system I’d ever experienced. They were nice cars, but the handling was a no go, obviously. A friend bought one and complained about the braking. ‘Oh, really? Hmm, that’s interesting’. Yeah, IRL, that is frightening…

My brother said there wasn’t enough crashes on bike races he watched. I said there were too many during NASCAR races that I’ve watched. :person_shrugging:

Boring is not always bad…

We had a rental jeep earlier this year for seven days. You’ll be pleased to know they have maintained their consistency in producing absolute crap.

It amazes me they still sell at all, not to mention the prices they charge.

This is such a bizarre take. New cars are so far superior to old ones in quality it’s hard to even compare them. They essentially last forever now.

$16,000 in 1964, adjusted for inflation is $162,000 in 2024.

$16,000 invested in the S&P in 1964 would be about $5.9m now. Flight attendant here I come!

Agreed. I’ll take 2x all day long. Hell, the triple 9 speed Ultegra I had years ago shifted perfectly. Should have keep it!

Well if that’s where you read it then it must be true…

That $20,000 is the inflation adjusted price. 1960s Mustang would have been around $2,000 - $3,000.

Correct per checking the Goog.

The OP was poorly worded which lead to confusion, IMO.

That aside, there are massive differences in the function & capabilities of the vehicles in the 60 year gulf between them. The delta in price to now sure makes sense to me in light of the safety features alone. Then add in the daily use & convenience features that relegate even a resto-mod to a weekend toy by comparison.

And then compare performace between that same 60 yr range and the Mustang is not even in the same class of vehicle. Take the best from 1964 against the lowest spec 2024 to see how they handle when pushed to the limit. I’ve seen this very thing on autocross courses and there is no comparison. They share a name and heritage, but the old one is a mere shadow of a modern version. Again, justified price for that delta to the new one.

I get it… stuff is expensive these days. But hyperbole and poor comparisons miss the reality present here.

Hell, most cars back the only had driver’s side side mirrors….at least you get both sides now!

And you rolled the windows down by hand! :scream:

Then add in safety features, improved climate controls, sounds systems, seating, etc.

Zero comparison between today’s cares and those from 50 years ago.
