Vittoria Air Liner - any long term users?

They’re not that hard IMO, it just takes a little practice. It’s not like Cushcore.

Best thing you can do is to pay attention to where your tire bead is sitting. It should be in the drop center, which will give you just enough extra “length” to pull it over the rim.

In my experience, the wheels were hookless with 21mm inner width and the tires were 30mm Schwalbe Pro Ones. I think the issue was lack of room to get any kind of lever under the tire bead.

Really interesting discussion going on here, as I’m planning in running GP5000 TT with these air liners… my wheels are 21IW and hooked.
For those who use them with road tyres, do you feel having them? Any experiences with any other brands?
How do you setup your pressure? I’m using the Silca pressure calculator and it doesn’t offer an option of the tyres+liners combo
Thanks

Very tight swat and the sealants makes it even harder. I had to cut my tyre length was and pry one side our first

I still use them because they do work and get you home

Did you get medium Air-Liners?

I can’t say I notice them at all - the compress with inflation. No experience of other brands though. I got them for somewhat fearing a blowout, but mainly for the ride flat capability.

I stuffed the larges in a 28 mm tire. Dude that was tough!

GP5000s TT in 25c are lighter and have less RR than most tyres which offsets the weight and increased RR of having tyre inserts coupled with the fact that (when rarely happens) I always struggle a ton in changing a tyre / putting an inner tube + in colder winter seasons with gloves ect changing tyres is even more a struggle while in summer bombing down alpine descents an insert would let me be more stress free in case of a flat
Maybe it’s me overthinking it, but the only 2 flats, I had this year (so far), happened in descents and in one occasion the tyre had a significant cut in one of the sidewall and even a dollar wouldn’t have saved the situation

I’ll be sticking to medium then!

Size down on the road. My goal from using these is to keep the tire on the rim while I try to get off the road or somewhere to stop and fix the issue. The run flat is a nice to have and might be a better experience with the right size airliner.

I used them on my gravel bike for Highlands Classic. 38mm Panaracer GK SK on a set of Light Bicycle carbon gravel specific rims. Did not notice in decrease in performance, but passed probably 2 dozen people along the course with punctures, so they seemed to do their job.

Ordered a second wheelset from Light Bicycle - super light carbon road set, carbon spokes, ceramic bearings etc to switch from gravel to road on same bike. Went 28 front/30 rear Conti 5K with the road liners. Mechanic said it took two of them 30 min to get seated. Then the tires simply would not hold air, no matter what tricks we tried. Went without the liner, mechanic rolled the tires on by hand and they held air perfectly, performed great during a 1/2 IM (won my age group, on a gravel bike with road wheels  ).

So…yes for gravel, no for road (at least not that particular wheelset)

I have a pair of road air liners hanging up.

I had them in for a while with a set of corsa speeds and loved them - didn’t notice any rolling resistance increase and liked the feeling that if I did puncture the tyre was unlikely to roll off.

But when I did puncture I wasn’t particularly comfortable riding with it flat (it was the rear tyre and I’m 80kg) and the insert made it completely impossible to remove the tyre on the road to put in a tube.

In the end the puncture did finally seal on that occasion but it made me re-assess the practicality of the setup for day-to -day use.

I now ride more robust tyres but with no insert. I will probably run the inserts with the corsa speeds on my TT bike.

I use the them in my gravel setup and they work just as advertised. Can run the pressure nice and low without burping. I’ve personally never had to pull one out for a tube on the side of the trail, but I’ve been with teammates who have and it wasn’t an issue.

For the road, I have a pair in my race wheels. Again, I really like the low pressures I can run. I’ve taken that wheel set through gravel sectors of road races and lots of wet crits. Lots of grip while still getting great rolling resistance with the Vitoria Corsas I run.

But there is no way I could get them off to put in a tube on the side of the road if the sealant can’t stop a puncture. So those wheels are only for when there is a follow car with my spares wheels or a crit with spares in the pit. I’d never bother with them for training/every day riding.

What high flow valve stems do folks recommend with these?

They come with proprietary valve stems to use.

I ordered a pair of vittora road bike liners through a local bike shop that didn’t :slightly_frowning_face:

I would talk to the shop….because they should have. Every place I have seen it includes valve stems. They require a special valve to prevent the liner from pushing up against the valve and blocking it.

I might have another extra set of Vittoria valve stems, let me know if you are in US and I’ll send them.

Thanks man I am in AZ, that would be awesome of you

Just installed my Air Liner XC. 100% the easiest insert install I’ve ever done, and by some margin.

Now just to hope the sealant I’ve picked is decent and that their claims of not absorbing sealant run true.
