The case with VC involves the National Park Service, not local authorities investigating a cyclist getting hit by a car.

My sister and brother-in-law have worked for Yosemite NP for about 25 years. They live in Yosemite village and I’ve spent a lot of time there and learned a lot about the park and how it’s run.
Like many NPs there’s big tension between making it accessible for visitors and keeping the wilderness intact and animals wild. The accessible parts of Yosemite get just a ton of traffic; in summer it can be literally bumper-to-bumper all around the loop in the valley, trails are totally slammed, no parking anywhere. The system only works if visitors follow rules, stay on trails, don’t feed the goddamn bears (you’d be surprised) etc.
Now what VC did does not seem to have had much impact as an isolated incident. But the mantra of rule enforcement in the park is “it might not matter if one person does it, but what if everyone did it?” So the fact the he not only transgressed, but promoted that transgression to his many followers was like a cape to a bull for park enforcement (I surmise.)
Honestly I’m fine with this response. NPs are fragile and generally overused. There are plenty of roads and trails that aren’t in NPs that we can all ride on.
This is exactly how I see it. When you have a huge audience you have a huge responsibility to set an example, or you end up being made an example of. Plus, if I’m not mistaken, Tyler lives just outside the park, so should be pretty familiar with the area and rules.
12 months of probation and 3 months banned from the park is certainly more lenient than jail time, but nothing to brush off either.
The punishment needs to fit the crime. It’s about proportionality. Imagine getting jail time if you dropped a cigarette butt on the pavement. Yes, you’ve broken the law, but what is a proportionate punishment?
I might actually a vote for a candidate who supports this level of punishment for people using the world as their ashtrays… 
I agree with you, but the post I was responding to was a pretty abstract post about “the rules” and “the authorities.” I also think people should follow the rules in parks. 
I think you completely misunderstood Phil’s situation. What he was doing was not illegal, he told the officer so much, and the officer basically retaliated by giving him a ticket that wouldn’t stand up in court BUT Phil needed to waste his time fighting it.

Sounds a bit OTT for getting lost! Back home they changed the laws a while back so you have the Right to Roam in such places. Whilst I’m not an expert on Trespass laws I think there would have to a lot of signage elsewhere in the UK to indicate that a trail was no longer a Right of Way.

Who is Tyler Pearce? He goes by Vegan Cyclist (because he’s a Vegan, but not preachy about it) and when people didn’t care for his channel being called “The Vegan Cyclist” he changed it to VC Adventures.

Right to Roam is great, doesn’t really apply here. This is more akin to someone riding their bike on the Cliffs of Moher.
He rode in a protected area off limits to bikes and he was aware of this. Our National Parks are just about the best thing our government has ever done, probably better than any other country in the world. I’m 100% for the enforcement of the rules so maybe our great grandchildren will be able to enjoy them as well.
Not really as you can ride through the visitor centre to the cliffs just like the thousands of others are encouraged to drive there then walk a short distance.

As you highlighted, he goes by VC Adventures now, but somebody earlier in this thread didn’t know what “VC” was referring to - so I changed it for legibility’s sake.
Branding and PR is tough business.

Not because I really care that he rode on that path, but because it seems like whenever the NPS has the chance to make an example out of a content creator with a large reach they seem to do it.

Eh. Jake Paul, in my opinion, is way more of a problematic figure than VC. Don’t really want to dive into it but feel free the sleuth his Wikipedia page, specifically Controversies and Legal Isses.
VC has a loud personality and is definitely a “bro” which I can see being not everybody’s cup of tea but I have been enjoying his series documenting his ride through the American West Coast. He seems like a chill guy, albeit goofy and out there.
