UNBOUND GRAVEL predictions

Stephen Hyde wins the 100 miler. Sweeeeeeet.

im a little surprised by the leaderboard right now, but it makes sense really. unbound gravel is a different beast and experience over this terrain shouldnt be overlooked.

What’s surprising? All but one are former World Tour riders. Two of which have finished on the podium. And the one who wasn’t (in the WT) is the defending champ.

a lot of people counted the american riders out. I never did, but it seemed a popular choice to side with the european riders and LTD seems to be the only one in contention.

i would say ted king being right there after injury is a pleasant surprise tho.

I’m surprised by Boswell being up there…hasn’t really raced gravel yet, IIRC and racing is not his main gig (working for Wahoo is).

And surprised Dylan Johnson is as far back as he is.

That surprises me. I wonder if he had a mechanical. Ian Boswell is a beast, that’s not all that surprising.

Am I the only one who thinks all the talk to how inclusive gravel is and then everyone being featured is white (and appear to identify as cis/hetero) that there is a disconnect? Hopefully there are more folks they’re planning to feature and talk to so they can show that inclusion rather than tell us how inclusive it is.

What do you mean by everyone being featured? By whom? Like major media outlets? VeloNews, etc? A lot of emphases is put on the race aspect and the huge names that come out, unfortunately, not so much on the average Joes and Jills who are there to challenge themselves.

A couple years back Crust bikes put together a squad of non-pros, one of which was black and had ONE leg and did an amazing documentation of it. Really cool.

My thoughts on him are clear, but I don’t wish injury on anyone.

Talking about the flo bikes coverage so far. Obviously it is early and generally the first finishers are white, but it does feel more like they’re patting themselves on the back. Maybe they didn’t have time to do some video packages to showcase it very well.

Like I don’t doubt that everybody is welcome, but there is an importance to showing that representation as well as saying it.

Ahh. I can’t comment on that. There’s SO much opportunity to do little documentaries on riders. It’s pretty sad that we don’t get to know any of the non-pro’s. I heard there was an 80-something on the startline…that woulda been a cool story.

Yeah lots of awesome opportunity! All those little stories on the course, all the stories of folks even just making it to the event. I’d love to have more of that kind of thing.

Given that FloBikes announced their coverage so recently, I presume there wasn’t much time to do that kind of thing. Hopefully that can be a big focus if they do it again next year. It would certainly make the coverage more interesting and entertaining than watching the talking heads of the commentators.

Does Flobikes actually plan to show live coverage?

Because $30 to watch two people sitting at a desk talking, with occasional shots of someone crossing the finish line in the 100 mile race is a bit disappointing.

I don’t expect there will be much coverage of the actual race itself given how remote it is. Here’s their announcement video which kinda hinted at the challenges at play and that there wouldn’t be much coverage of the actual race itself.

There is such a big opportunity for someone to start investing some money and production value in covering these events seeing as road cycling in the USA is essentially dead, at least at the pro-level, and gravel is thriving.

Hopefully, we can expect that to happen. Although, that might commercialize it more and bring in too much corporate BS. Seems like a great event for RedBull to get involved in. I’m conflicted though, but I really would love to see gravel racing with good live coverage.

Just to be clear…I was not wishing injury on him (or anyone), but I am completely indifferent to the fact that he crashed out. There is a difference between the two.

Willing Eric Marcotte to avoid any major mechanicals so he can demonstrate his ability. This course suits him well…

A FloSports representative told BRAIN that the vehicles will capture the men’s leaders, chase pack and women’s leaders for the last 20 miles or so of each race. In total, the race coverage will consolidate 200 miles of racing into seven hours. The broadcast will also include athlete interviews and coverage of the race’s product expo
