Training a cycling newbie

@nelsosi was about the same age as your wife when I realized being a desk jockey for 20+ years had taken a toll and I needed to get fit and lose weight. Started with walking for fitness, and progressed to walking + weights + spin class. Spin class was awesome! Loud music, a fun instructor, and class filled with people in their 40s-70s. Met a guy my age in class and he got me back into riding outside. Which brings me to…

One of my daughters did spin classes at college, and she loves the calorie burn! Since spin classes aren’t an option at the moment, as STP stated above apparently Peloton supports a bring your own bike option?! A former spin instructor told me there are Peloton pro cycling on-demand classes from Christian Vande Valde (and others?), and those are more structured training and not HIIT.

The other approach discussed in the thread is being used by one of my sisters. Last fall I turned her on to TrainerRoad and she bought a smart trainer. She loves TR and structured training, and is doing low volume and in specialty phase. Her motivation is gran fondos, and she has cycled since her 20s so perhaps it was a natural progression? She didn’t know anything about power meters or smart trainers, I just needed to explain what to buy, how to get started, and she was off and training!

Good luck!
