In addition, perhaps the combination of much improved fitness and a more aggressive, hence faster body position contribute to it as well. On the flats a steel bike should not be slower on account of the frame material (i. e. all other things being equal).

I would add: Look where you want to go, not where you don’t want to go i.e. target fixation. Particularly in corners, but applies anywhere.
