2016 Canyon CF SLX 8… had it 7yrs… been an absolut
e joy to ride and still going strong. Love it.
I used to have the same ultimate build in silver paintjob. Absolute rocket, best riding bike I’ve ever had!
I still think about getting another rim brake frame. There’s never been a situation where I wished I had had disc brake bike on the road. I also have a spare Campagnolo groupset. A 12 speed disc group costs quite a bit more than the rim group.
The only reason I can think of for going disc is getting wider rims and being able to run 30mm tires (which will probably be around 32mm inflated).
Such a nice bike!!
Colnagos are a thing of beauty!
Hope you enjoy riding it!
Would you mind repositioning the tires so that their label is centered over the valve? ![]()
I bought a rim brake S5 used (and built it up with everything used or in secondary market) to replace a venge Vias disc (non-integrated)- seriously this bike is MILES better, it’s not even a comparison!! Several pounds lighter, more comfortable over bumps, lighter, more aggressive position, and honestly better braking without the constant frustration of disc brake, rub, squeals, needing to true rotors, etc.
Build details:
Fully kitted up, I’m almost down to 6.6kgs, and that’s not even with super light wheels or cranks. I have a good laugh at all the SL7s and other pro bikes weighing well over 7.
Confirming it’s fast- I did 100 miles averaging 21mph with 5k feet gained averaging 230NP a couple weeks ago, and I’m no featherweight (160lbs). That included pulling a group along rolling terrain at 23mph on 260W normalized, whereas that would’ve been 300 on the old bike!
Loving my S5. SRAM Force AXS 1x, Quarq PM, Hope RS4s laced to Nextie 58mm rims. Yes the saddle is way too far back, I think it slipped while I was riding but it’s back where it should be now.
I will try to get a picture of my Mates S5 that he just built.
It is pretty sweet, its a SRAM Red AXS 12-speed with hydraulic rim brakes, Rotor cranks, Winspace R67 wheels etc etc.
He basically did the same thing you did and is saying the same things, long live the rim brake bike haha!!!
I couldn’t let my rim brake Pinarello GAN RS go ! So I sent it to Cleveland Carbon last autumn for a custom paint job in Ferrari Tour de France (TdF) Blue. I know… who’d be silly enough to paint a Pinarello in that color? ME
With any luck, it’ll be back to me in a week or so…
(RED eTap, Hunt 45mm wheels, Quarq)
Wow very very similar build, great minds right! It’s such a great bike as well in that nothing is integrated so you can run whatever aftermarket components you want (except the seatpost, but even that I sourced a new lighter one on Ebay since the prior user had cut it too short). I live not having the brake under the seatstay too, so much easier to keep clean and work on.
Only complaints are somewhat limited adjustability in seatpost (and needing to cut), and the bottle cage on the seat tube is a bit awkwardly placed. That’s literally it. It’s visually appealing, super slick, and no-nonsense, which is exactly what you’d want from Cervelo.
Lousy? I’ve never heard a bad thing about the C64.
I currently ride a C59 and I wouldn’t mind upgrading to a C64 though I’m looking at other stuff as well.
Well good luck. Very average bike to me, Colnago is just a name that rests on its laurels, probably the new ownership will change that.
Funnily enough I like the C59 aesthetics much better over the C64 and when I went to order a C60 my dealer told me 24 hours later the C64 was hitting the market, so the C64 was the first one delivered in my region ( Sardinia)
With the new C68 being $7,000 retail for just the frameset I’m out of the Colnago game. Plus Colnago is retired so it’s just a name now. They want to be the Rolex of the bike world. Ok, rich old geezers with gold chains and hairy chest can ride those bikes. ![]()
Officine Mattio came on my radar. You can get a quasi custom, made in Italy frame for less than a Colnago.
The top of my list is a Tarmac SL7 but even those are kind of expensive for what they are especially since all the covid price increases.
I’m probably just going to just keep riding my C59 until a clear choice shows up. I’m also waiting to see if Campagnolo ever catches up. Supposedly their next group is going to wireless Super Record at $5,000 without a power meter. If that is the new order, I’ll be riding Sram or Shimano next.
Nice. I thought about getting some hydraulic rims brakes for mine but I couldn’t find a set for love nor money.
My mate sent me more photos of his bike with more details
15.5lbs without pedals
Very nice build for sure! I was looking at the Winspace integrated bar as well, it looks pretty nice and not too beefy unlike Vision or some of the early Bontrager ones. The aggressive negative angle would’ve made me run a spacer under the stem with a 51cm frame, which I didn’t want for vanity reasons!
The only thing I would think twice about are hydraulic rim brakes. I’ve heard so many issues about the Magura rim brakes leaking, cracking, not performing well, etc.- a lot of folks with P5s swapped them out for Tririg brakes. I also wanted brakes personally that I could easily work on and adjust, and running a break cable is 1,000,000x easier than dealing with hydraulic fluid. Major reason I wanted to be rid of disc brakes was to ditch hydraulics.
