The Ironman Training 2020 Thread

Whats the best way to do longer intervals like Elephant +2? In the TT position (lowering the %) or seated?

I’ve been doing all my longer intervals (15mins +) in the TT position and the 2-3min intervals seated.

Presume everything should be done in TT position when close to a race? Or is reducing FTP not ideal?

I think its very individual.
I personally like to have a target power so i know what i need to chase on the ride.

Ideally perhaps. I mix them up as I feel like it. Right now Ive been on the TT for 12 months so aero often seems easier, or at least more comfortable. Ill do VO2 upright for the most part now, but earlier in the year Id mix them too; the first interval upright, the second in aero, or the first few minutes of a threshold interval in aero the rest upright.

The vast majority of benefit is in doing the session at all, fuelling and recovering appropriately. The particular position or intensity should suit you forst and foremost, and if that means 100% in aero, so much the better.

Mm, something I could try as well.

I checked and and mostly VO2max I bail quite often and truggle sometimes with threshold workouts

Sometimes I can already feel at warmup that it’s not going to be my day.

Oh boy. Dont judge a wo based on the wu…
You would be surprised what you can do after a good wu.

You owe it to yourself! Dont feel negative the first 15 minutes of a ride…otherwise you might go into the wrong mentality…

I bet you would not bail from an 800 at the track because you didn’t felt it during wu!

Agreed–sometimes the first interval is what really wakes things up so the w/u shouldn’t be used as the judge for how the workout is going to go. If you find yourself able to complete the first interval and think it was tough, give yourself the rest interval and try the second without adjusting anything and see how it goes–sometimes getting that first one out of the way will feel the hardest. Of course, sometimes it’s just not your day and maybe the first interval does end up not going well and you’d then adjust from there.

Decisions, decisions… Early entry for Placid just opened up. Timing wise, seems like the last option to try to KQ and be ready to compete 3months later in Kona.

Already scheduled for Tulsa, and if I don’t KQ there I would want to try once more but 8 weeks between two Ironmans sounds pretty rough.

I mean… it will take at least 2 weeks to recover properly after a Kona effort.
That give you 4 weeks to tune things up 2 weeks to taper and repeat.

Sounds mentally hard.

Sounds mentally hard.

Being single helps

I have come to the realization that unless you get married with a person who also do endurance sports, it will be VERY VERY VERY hard to train for an IM, border line impossible.

Would that be for Kona 2021? Do we know if there will actually be spots for that race with everyone being deferred from this year? It will be interesting to see how they handle that end of things…2-day Kona! :joy:

I think for this reason, Boston Marathon decided not to do deferrals.

You can reapply with your time, but you will be put against people who ran after the window closed last year.

Boston gave refunds though, right? That’s a 4-letter word for Ironman… :joy: It seems like that would be a good way to go about it so as not to keep shifting things indefinitely trying to get back on track with qualifications.

Time to roll this out

Yes they did. They gave people the option to pay $50 for the “privilege” of suffering through a non race 26.2 mile run to get a fucking tshirt. I did also got a sticker, a gel, blocks, and a protein shake. Good value! :joy:

So far both races have slots but they haven’t said how many. There weren’t very many 2020 races to even get people qualified so it probably wont be too bad. But I’m just dreaming here.

Ahh, yeah I guess there’s quite a few open slots from all the races that didn’t happen this spring/fall.

ETA: Looks like IM Tallinn had 60 slots, up from their original 40? I’m not sure if that’s actual or predicted.

Last year at IMAZ, water temp was 63F air temp at start was 62f with high of 72 but 60’s throughout the bike course. Like you I was concerned about being cold and finally decided that it’s one day and I can absorb the discomfort. Just went with my tri suit. The first hour on the bike my feet and hands were a little cold but I never felt cold after that.

Fwiw Gdynia stuck with their initial 30 for 70.3 worlds. Apparently the deferrals from the cancellation in 20 took the slots of cancelled qualifier races.

Details of the Ironman Virtual Kona if anyone else wants to take part :grinning: you know you want to
