How was your month?
Ticking over. Back in the pool, back in the gym. Main training starts October.
Thanks @JoeX, with IM Wales cancelled I’ve nothing lined up now until IM Wales 2021. Been trying to keep consistency up through the past few months, particularly focussing on the run. Still waiting for my local pool to reopen so no swimming for me. Have just signed up with a coach for the first time so really interested to see how that goes through to the end of the year. Hoping it’ll set me up with a great base to kick on next year.
It’s been quite a summer but I finally found direction and motivation again in pure cycling. I did minimal running mostly because it was so hot here and my legs were dead from all the cycling. I got up to about 20hrs a week in cycling alone with a fair few Zwift races. FTP has risen to 330 and weight went from 162–>157. I am doin the weekly TTT WTRL series which I love. I do that race, intervals on Tuesday to tune up, then easy aerobic on Saturday or a longer race. I also fill in easy rides before and after work for volume and to burns some calories I don’t think my FTP will rise any more since it’s “racing season” but I am happy with where it’s at. Weight will most likely stay between 155 and 157 too. Running is still there but it’s only like 20miles a week with a tempo run and that’s it.
Swimming is…well…non existent since pools are still closed. I got in once since June and was able to do some 50m repeats on a minute coming in on the 45 and felt fine so the feel for the water is still there. For how much longer who knows ![]()
Anyway, I’m going to take 2 weeks off at the end of September and then start focusing on tri again. Because of the lack of swimming and the uncertainty of the pool situation, I am thinking of doing 70.3s next year and not even bother focusing on the IM. I feel like I could scrape together at least a 30-35min 70.3 swim and then let my bike and run training carry me the rest of the way. 2.4 miles is a different story though. Harder to BS
Do you think they would allow me to transfer from IMLP to Eagleman? Doubtful but worth an email.
I’m used plan builder to build out a plan through Eagleman next year and it looks great. I will most likely add on some more aerobic bike volume and run volume because I have the base already (CTL is 125 right now). I will need a break from VO2 but the plan has at least one VO2 session every two weeks it looks like. The swims are a question mark but that is out of my control unfortunately. I am also going to do the Zwift Tri Academy but doubtful that I’ll even get a nod.
It’s almost time to create a 2021 thread :). Thanks for checking in @JoeX
I’m in the same boat with the pool with no indication of reopening in sight. More time to focus on the bike and run but I miss the water! ![]()
I use Stryd outside 98% of the time. I may get a treadmill in case of another lockdown.
I have been using Palladino’s plan up until now while training for triathlons. I try to keep the number of runs to 3 (4 max). It has worked very well. Like you said, the structure is solid and regular CP test are nice as you always are up to date for your zones. I am going to look deeper into the full IM plan that Stryds offer. Looks pretty good. When I train for only a running race I use Steve’s 5 days plan.
I also use Chris Hagues method for fine tuning your race running. Check his video

Also read this for good guidelines on running power in ttriathlons
Hope this helps.
I’ve been doing a run focus as of late building my mileage up with straight easy runs, with the intention of following the “Hadd” run plan. I’ve gone 60k/60k/70k/90k and I’m at 50km so far in 4 days this week. 90k is a new high mark for me as I’ve only got to a bit above 80k a handful of times so I’m pretty pumped about that.
I’m doing my runs with about a 5-10 beat lower heart rate target than my normal easy runs which was a bit more of a challenge starting out, but they’ve been feeling better and my average pace has slowly been ticking down as of late so I’m seeing some progress at least.
You can add me to the list! I’m training for a 70.3 next year, but I think I’m still allowed on the thread, right?
If you’d prefer I wait until a 2021 Thread is created, that’s fine too. Thanks!
Yeah, originally it was focussed on those taking part in 2020 races, we switched it to anyone training with long course in mind, during 2020.
My 2020 focus was speed at the Oly distance and I still participate here. This thread probably should just be called the “Triathlon Training 2020 Thread”
Thanks for the clarification. I was training for 70.3 this year as well.
Thanks for the tag @JoeX
Got the link today for IMC 2021 so I guess it’s official (again)?!
I’m in week 7 of an 18 week run block and things are feeling better on that front. Because of the run volume I’ve cut way back on the biking, experimenting with outside workouts but mainly just riding for fun. And back in the pool too although all the outdoor pools are closing after this weekend so we’ll see how things work out as it gets colder (we have no change room access).
Cheers @JoeX !
I just picked up my bib and checked out the swim start. Shakeout swim and bike check in tomorrow and race on sunday, bib #540 if anyone wants to check the tracker.
I am so pumped to race, I hope all goes well. Will post report on Monday or so.
Yeah definitely keeps us all focused and engage month to month
What’s the scoop on the IMC registration? Is there a deadline for when people who were automatically deferred have to complete their registration by? Just curious as someone who wasn’t registered this year, but with the long - term plan to do it next year… Hoping some spots might open up, but not holding my breath for snagging one of any that do.
