did you reply in the wrong thread?
hey there! i have been doing some long rides and planning to do more on the trainer when i get closer to the race day.
something like 2 hours at tempo for a start. after my race last sunday, i realise mentally, i am still very weak and needs to improve more.
i don’t really enjoy using zwift because the graphics and how it works gets me very irritated. i game a lot and how zwift works just don’t work for me. haha
I’m looking to do either the spring or summer one as well but would like to have a partner to ride with, go there with. I’m based in the US but travel to Taiwan quite often for work. Summer would give me more time to train, but not sure how much warmer the summer one will be.
the spring one is april so would that fit into your training phase?
summer is super hot there. i was there in june last year and the heat is intense but since the race starts in the morning and should end by noon, i think it would be more tolerable.
Yeah, I don’t train for races, so I originally focused on the spring. I’m around the 3.5w/kg mark, start building phase next week.
Could use a partner to go to the location from Taipei - I also don’t speak Mandarin, so I haven;t quite planned how I’m going to bring my bike to and back from the hotel. My bike is already in Taipei at my company.
i just joined TR in december because a friend wanted to do the KOM. currently at 3.2w/kg and hope i can hit 3.5 or more so i will be able to clear the time cut.
i think you should be able to hire a driver to send you to the start.
@rogerchua Long tempo rides are good both physically and mentally. TR has a bunch of them you can pick from. I prefer the non-interval types, no real rest breaks (e.g., Gibraltar, Phoenix, Polar Bear, Cumberland)
@fasterthanever I cannot say for sure, but I might do the June 29 KOM. Even if I am not able to (newborn twins), I might know some others doing the event. I have never ridden up from the east side. So, in terms of logistics and whatnot, I am a bit clueless. Next time you are in Taipei, feel free to get in touch via PM here.
thanks for the help. i was searching for tempo rides on TR yesterday to see what i can use. will try out those u recommended. good luck with the kids. lucky my kid is 10 so she can take care of herself already.
I decided not to sign up for the April one and either take on the Summer one this year or even the Pro October one if I think I could get to that level (I wonder what the w/kg estimate is for the Pro). Just scheduling conflicts came up and perhaps I could have done April but it would have been stressful.
i just signed up the summer ride a few days back. i don’t think i will be good enough to attempt the October one. 6hrs seems impossible for me right now.
OK - just checking quite widely but has anyone received any news about whether the event on Monday is still going ahead?
I would guess that after today’s earthquake there is a high chance it has been cancelled.
I have no idea. I just learnt about the quake as well. Not doing the spring race so I guess I won’t be able to know.
The earthquake was a 6.1 in Hualien where the race starts. No official statement on the KOM website or in the news that I can find. Friend of a friend news is that there were landslides on the route, but nothing cancelled as of yet. If I see/hear anything official tomorrow, I will update here again.
Even here in Taipei, we were rocking and swaying for the better part of a minute. Nothing crazy, but definitely felt. FYI, for those not familiar w/Taiwan, earthquakes are a common occurrence.
Road closures due to debris from landslides and also for safety due to expected aftershocks and further instability. Crews are working. They expect to have everything open in the morning by 7-8am.
If you read Chinese:
If I find English news or hear more in the morning. I will update again.
Edit:
Found official English bulletin from Taroko National Park:
Cancelled! From the Taiwan Cycling Federation:
Safer this way.
the summer edition of the KOM is less than a month away. anyone here taking part? i am flying off from Singapore. hopefully i can finish within the time cut.
All the best Roger. Plan to do Taiwan KOM 2020 after peak challenge Peaks Challenge Falls Creek | Sunday 12 March 2023 | Bicycle Network
Good luck! Would love to hear how you do and how the training went. I will try for next March when it’s cooler.
