From what I can tell, they are killing all possibility of recording any ANT+ or Bluetooth devices at all. What a major annoyance–while I didn’t use it that often, it was my go-to app when I travel. I’d love to use RideWithGPS, but they only support Bluetooth and all of my devices are ANT+. I guess I’ll use the Wahoo app in the future. I was already planning to kill my Summit subscription and not renew when it’s up in January; this makes it even more certain. They’re really going backwards.
My guess is that the crashes were minimal and in fact this is Strava going into non-compete mode with Garmin, Wahoo, and other sensor vendors so that they can focus on being a social media platform. Now they can divert their resources previously used to keep up with the latest BT or ANT+ hardware and have them focus on stories, kudos, and other “engagement” stuff.
Meanwhile, check out cyclinganalytics.com. Great UI and the developer, David, is very responsive.
Has everyone seen this article.
Why pay for Strava and it’s “extra” features when no longer supporting bluetooth connectivity? I use a Wahoo Bolt, but also record on my iPhone with a heart rate monitor and now I will not be able too. My subscription just renewed too!
- Out of curiosity, why?
- If you really want to cancel, I would contact their support and make the request. Maybe they will refund some or all of it (depending on month/year payment timing).
This was covered well on the Fit File Podcast, Episode 90.
As a former software engineer, this make no sense.
Not that I care, I use a Garmin and I don’t run, but come on. How stupid do they think we are?
As mentioned in the cast above, it seems that they have ulterior motives (priorities?) or are incompetent at solving the problem(s). One is a bit worse than the other, in my eyes, but neither is “good” when you consider that they are likely removing functionality that may well work for some of their users (despite the problems for others).
Good point on running. I sometimes run to supplement training and use a Wahoo Strap and my phone.
Thanks, I will take a listen.
Not sure I get the issue.
Got a wahoo Tickr they have apps still works and syncs. As does any head unit… Garmin, Wahoo etc. Just can’t connect on their phone app, which isn’t a bad thing as the GPS on most mobiles is way out anyway.
I had trouble finding it, but we already had a post on this topic. I just merged the two (old into new).
The old one covered a few of the better options for connecting and tracking devices besides Strava. Skim above to see prior comments.
I am in a similar situation. My Summit just renewed in the past 2 months. I have a Bolt and like it, but the GPS on my phone is better so I record my MTB rides with both and keep the Strava recording which then syncs to my TrainerRoad Calendar. I do not understand the business plan with this decision.
This strava fix reminds me one of old South Park quote :
Stan : I don’t get it.
Kyle : Neither Do I.
I’ve been close to ditching Summit for a while - this was the last straw.
I wish I’d known about this before the annual renewal last month.
i am likely to keep the one with live segments, but not the whole summit, the general list of available features are below par for such a popular app, the stats seem somewhat non-enlightening. Still, am starting to find it all a bit boring. I use TR calendar and related to keep track of everything in a more meaningful way.
I am also doing just the live segments one. I dropped paid Strava 2 years ago, when the ditched the Zwift discount.
I added the segments one back late summer to have some fun chasing local segments after my main event season. It’s a fun little toy and a nice switch in riding and motivation.
Strava is just a huge pot to water all the growing plants around it. I hope the industry finds a way around strava… it just keeps getting worse
Ray’s wrap-up on the Strava dump.
So the Apple Watch Strava app is a kluge at best. Last I checked the iPhone Strava app could not use the Apple watch as a HRM. Still true?
Yes.
However, just start the activity on the watch. Then the heartrate will be recorded.
Yep, I have ditched it too. Don’t need TR and Strava anyway.
