Standard Mode gone?

Does this mean we won’t see that option for the Neo trainer now (since it can’t be calibrated anyway)?

Great addition if so

Yep, that’s correct!

About to setup my Kickr Core and just wanted to make sure I understood this thread. There is no longer a way, using the Core, to replicate my current Kurt Kinetic fluid trainer’s curve, but I can only go with Erg or Resistance (Magnetic)?

I was hoping to use the fluid resistance feature on occasion to “chase after the watts” as I do now for all workouts. And I particularly liked going after them with sprint starts intervals.

If I did want a fluid type resistance workout (non erg, non magnetic) do I just need to use the Wahoo app and go for a free ride??

I want to bump this post as well. I have a Saris H3 and only use ERG for endurance or recovery rides. I would love, love, LOVE it if my Saris could simulate the resistance curve of my old fluid trainer. I bought a wheel off trainer because I didn’t want to deal with trainer tires and wheel slip anymore and elite doesn’t ship their wheel off fluid trainer to the US if they even still make it (plus i already have the saris so that won’t happen now but would have been my first upgrade choice from the jet fluid pro). So please trainerroad, make some sort of fluid trainer mode for ERG trainers (that’s available on iOS, I have yet to get a laptop for trainerroad)

Completely agree, would love to simulate the fluid curve, much like I’ll switch up the big/small gear when in Erg mode.

I’ll be running this on OS device, or 2017 Macbook Pro. Will I therefore be, or not be able use Standard mode?

Thanks as always for your input and support!

Assuming you use a Wahoo trainer (Core qualifies), via Bluetooth (BLE) connection (available in you Mac), I think you will have the Standard option.

last week I did a workout on a MacBook Pro, connected to Kickr 2017 (direct-drive) via Bluetooth, and Standard Mode was an option.

So yes, if using TrainerRoad with Bluetooth connection between MacBook and Kickr Core you should be able to use Standard mode.

I’d like to confirm what others have said in that Standard mode is an option when paired via Bluetooth, but when paired via ANT+, your options are ERG or Resistance mode.

This has to do with the fact that, when using ANT+, we pair over the ANT+ FE-C protocol which does not have a Standard mode option.

Thank you very much for that clarification. Have not done enough research on the different protocols, but I do know that I want to use ERG mode for most of the training, but use the Fluid/Standard to mix it up (as others have mentioned, I enjoy mentally chasing the watts using “Interval power” numbers.

I assume that for sprint workouts people that don’t use ERG will use Resistance Mode? And if so, at what wattage? Is there an article/post? I searched but couldn’t find it.

Thanks as always.

This requires a bit of trial and error since everyone’s FTP is different and each trainer’s resistance is a bit different. For most people, the optimal resistance lies somewhere between 20 and 40.

For example my TrainerRoad 20-min and 8-min FTP tests were done using resistance mode setting of in 30-36% range (FTP of 220-250W). At least for the longer/traditional FTP tests, the exact setting for resistance mode depends on gearing and how I’m feeling that day. I don’t have a lot of experience using resistance mode, but recently tried it on an aerobic endurance ride and lowered setting to 20.

My preference for sprint work is to do them during aerobic endurance rides. Last week I used Standard mode (Baxter) and did 4 sprints while experimenting with level settings. My best sprints were performed using Level = 0 while working in 150-180W aerobic endurance range. I plan to use Level 0 going forward.

I have a probably silly question, having only ever paired with ant+

…what’s standard mode?

Standard Mode = Level Mode

Level: Choose your power curve! Just like riding on a fluid or wind trainer, the faster you go, the harder it gets. The level you select determines the progression of your power curve.

Thanks!

I can’t visualise how that’s different from resistance mode, but it sounds interesting

I’ll have to pair via bluetooth and have a play :+1:

Not the precise ones in here, but the main differences:

image

  • Resistance Mode = more linear line, even move left to right on the graph (See the Green “Mag High/Lo”)
  • Standard/Level = more progressive curved line, gets steeper and steeper as you move left to right (see the Red “Fluid2” and Yellow “Wind”)

Edit to add another example:

  • Red is like Standard/Level
  • Light Blue is like Resistance

@alexgold123 last week a forum member that I follow on Strava put it very simply, as title of a workout:

we had a chat about it on Strava. My highlights of convo are above. Standard mode makes the trainer ride more like riding outside, but you can’t mentally zone out like is possible with Erg mode.

@mcneese.chad and I discussed this a bit offline. Chad, after the group workout I was surprised that the last sprint (Level = 0) had my best 5-10 second sprint power in a long long long time (even compared to outside).

I can see what people are upset they can’t use it then!

I have noticed (since coming off 3 months on the rollers) the Kickr Core feels ‘sticky’ in resistance mode, like I can’t ever get on top of the gear. This might feel more natural it sounds like.

What % of Resistance are you using, and what rough gearing are you using in that %?

i had it set to 30% but I was right down in 50/11 doing Seiler intervals (around 400w), so stuck it up to 36% and am now around 50/19-21 at a guess
