Specialized epic Evo comp 2022 - how to save weight

I am still looking for marginal gains. Has anyone used a Carbon-Ti chainring with a SRAM Eagle drivetrain?

I am using their thru-axles on my Madone so I know the make quality stuff but chainrings are something different. Any firsthand experience is highly appreciated!

Mt. Zoom cockpit is a very nicely priced for great weight and so far at least for me great components. I highly recommend them.

Do you have bar and stem installed? What’s your bike and riding style/trail type?

I’m thinking about upgrading my trusty xc hardtail to an Epic evo base model. Got a pretty great deal for 2021 model from my local bike shop. What would be the most beneficial upgrades for that?

I was planning to:

  • Swap the drivetrain from my old bike. Full 12-sp XT.
  • Upgrade the wheelset. I could get some light carbon hoops from my local wheelbuilder at around 1000€ (1250g, dt 240 hubs, 25mm internal)
  • maybe change the fork for something like RS SID SL

I could get the bike for about 3000 euros without the wheels. Would this make any sense or are there any better options for xco racing at 4k pricepoint? With the fork upgrade i would be pushing the towards a 5k mark so i’m not sure if it’d be worth the upgrade. Opinions?

I think it’s about the best way you could spend 5k, and about the best XC bike period right now. You will probably want to upgrade the fork eventually, might as well do it now and sell the stock fork as new takeoff. I think I’d go for 34 step cast over SID SL (too many reports of bushing play in the SID); you could probably save a few hundred by getting an older model or lightly used 34SC. Might want to change out the touch points too (bar, and stem if you need a different length than the stock 60mm).

Lael reports that her Epic weighs less than her Diverge. Perhaps check out her build?

Thanks for the insight! I hadn’t heard about rockshox’ problems but that’s definately putting me off… I also considered Fox 34 SC but the pricing in Europe is just ridiculous (~1250€ for the factory version and around 1100€ for the performance model). For comparison, the SID SL is 750€. Maybe the Manitou r7? Around 700€ for the pro model and 600€ for the elite.

I’ll also ask a deal for the bike + fork swap from the bikeshop. It’s possible they have some repaired left over forks from warranty claims and such that they can’t sell for full retail.

Manitou fork would be great!

Here’s a nice build with one: 2021 Epic EVO? | Page 102 | Mountain Bike Reviews Forum

Nice! I think I’m ready to pull the trigger soon.

With the wheels, fork, drivetrain and some other small bits (handlebar, saddle and tires mainly) I think the bike could come under 25 lbs race-ready while not blowing up my budget completely (looks like sub 4500€).

Here’s sub 20 lbs. build if anyone is interested:

I’ll update how I ended up!

My weight conscious build includes, xx cranks, x01 cassette, 1450g wheels, tune bar, Esi-grips and syntace stem. Bike yoke seat post and carbon railed saddle. Frame, suspension, tyres and brakes I choose what are best for the my riding. I weight 95kg… so 150lbs guy can run lighter wheels fo example without worries.

Anyone with an 21/22 evo look at installing 3 position lockouts on both shocks?

I’ve been thinking about this on my ‘21 Evo. Not sure what’s needed besides the lockout lever. Is there a swappable cap on the suspension? Also how about cable guides or through the frame?
