Use the full immersion once every 1000KM or so and top off with the drip wax every 100 miles or so. No need to fully remove chain more than once a month or so.
Have you or anyone used CeramicSpeed UFO Lube? I also use the one drip per link, but do not have an issues with dripping.
Just curious if SSS is more āwateryā than the possibly more viscous UFO Lube.
I use ufo, really like how it goes on. Have 0 issues with it not sticking and dripping everywhere. I tried the Silca before and had the same issues discussed above.
I start off with full immersion. Clean chain quickly with wet wipes after almost every ride due to the terrain where I ride. Reapply sss drip with my finger tips. Takes a minute or so, almost no losses. Every once in a while a full immersion. Shimano chains last 1000s of kilometres without any stretch. Eagle chains usually break at some point but stretch is minimal too.

I like that you can add gear from Garmin Connect to a custom dashboard. I use molten speed wax and have 3 different chains that I alternate. I either top up with Squirt at 350 miles or swap chains. Garmin connect gives me a push notification when the gear is at its max distance. I also have a simple google doc that I use to track miles one the various chains. Itās a little bit of faffing around, but helps keep me organized.
Iām going to use drip wax tonight, and then bump max distance to 2250 ā which is 2080 + 170 a nice round number. I could have added 150 miles for a new max distance of 2230, but this chain is still really quiet and running smooth.
Iām only tracking 1 chain so no special naming required. Only need to increase the Max Distance after every drip waxing. No spreadsheets or other faffing.
If I had 3 chains, after swapping I would change the Automatically Add to⦠Thats what I do when changing my wheels.
Can you track multiple āgearā? Iāve been tracking the mileage on my bike, I created a chain and am trying to have it used on my cycling activities and it will only let me have one default.
Itās more important for me to track the chain but it would be nice to do both.
Create an item under Gear Type: Other
Try the website, or if that doesnāt work try the mobile app. These are all my per-ride defaults:
a lot of tires that I havenāt retired yet.
Easy enough to deselect 4 items if I ride a spin bike at the gym.
I wish I was organized enough to actually track mileage. Ha. I just ride until I feel they need attention.
I do have each chain stored in a Ziploc with the name of the bike on it and whether itās clean or dirty. 12 chains on the go and just clean and immerse them all at once. Drip when needed.
More reason why I wish there was a way to associate certain sensors to specific equipment and have that written into the FIT file that all platforms would then pickup up.
E.g.,
- Quark D-Zero ANT ID#123 = Road Bike
- Quark ANT ID #124 = Gravel Bike
- Speed Sensor ANT ID #341 = Gravel wheel set 1
- Speed Sensor ANT ID #541 = Gravel wheel set 2
For sensor manufacturers, something like the above would incentivize people (or at least a subset of people) to put sensors on every wheel set, bike, etc.
This seems like such an obvious thing. Where is my bOT (bike of things) network? ![]()
Ha ha. Where is the demand for such a feature? With all these niche features, what we need are truly scriptable platforms, and then interfaced into ChatGPT so even the non-programmers can join in the fun! Where is my pOT (platform of things)? ![]()
Am I reading the chart correctly that the SYNERG-E E-BIKE LUBE is the best traditional oil lube? Probably way better than the Rock n Roll lubes?
For dry contamination block, yes. 3x the wear on the wet contamination block.
Iād almost consider Flower Power (as mentioned above) as nearly a traditional lube, and itās performance is first class so definitely look into that ![]()
Anyone try this lube for offroad? I saw one random review that said it didnt last long at all
efficiency or wear be damned. Iāll be looking for something that is low maintenance. Basically for the user who isnāt keeping up with general maintenance and not looking to min max everything
Itās a wet lube. If you want to clean the inside of the chain, to have it actually clean and efficient as when fresh, it requires the full multi solvent bath as for a new chain to do it properly.
It stays clean pretty well in the dry, much less so in the wet. A single wet ride will make the inside of the chain filthy and accelerate wear.
But I agree for a commuter bike that logically doesnāt have a $$$$ drivetrain and isnāt performance sensitive, a wet lube and wiping the chain often is the most appropriate thing. And Synergetic is the best wet lube.
whats this wet vs dry lube thing?
iām spent on synergetic after 2 chains didnāt last nearly as long as my super secret lubed one. Itās touted as a low maintenance chain lube or one for those who donāt want to get into the weeds with deep cleans but I found the rate at which it collected grit and thus increased chain wear defeats that purpose. Iām decently fastidious about chain cleaning trying to do full degrease/regrease as often as I can and wiping down and reapplying as seemed necessary. But I have a 3 year old KMC that Iāve been using super secret on and the park tool chain checker still doesnāt fit on the .5 side. However my gravel bike and my wifeās bike with a dura ace and ultegra chains respectively are both well into the .5 stretch and the gravel chain isnāt much more than a year old. Plus the wife doesnāt ride nearly as often as I do. Sure the chain checker is not the end all be all for chain wear but it doesnāt bode well. Iām switching all bikes to drip wax and then probably hot wax as the cleaning ritual is more thorough and although more time consuming itās not needed nearly as often. The mostly clean to the touch drivetrain is an added bonus. Iāll add the synergetic gets damn gross in no time so make sure you have gloves or lava soap handy to clean up every time you need to touch your drivetrain. Not too worried about wet riding as Iām a fair weather rider for the most part but even then when Iāve been caught out in inclement weather Iāve never found the super secret to just disappear and not lube anymore. Seems to do just fine if it penetrates the rollers well enough.
Synergetic is much the same as any wet lube (oil based), just fractionally better at staying clean and fractionally better performance while itās clean.
Yes it does require full flushing with multiple solvent baths to get it back to a full clean state once itās dirty.
But equally, itāll stay on for a long distance in the wet where most wax based lubes (certainly drip ones) will fail.
And if used in the winter, itāll stop your chain from rusting.
Weāre not getting the amazing efficiency from it on our commuter bikes in winter, but no one is doing full maintenance on their winter bikes; itās the best option.
Itās also sneakily the best possible option for the bike on your turbo trainer inside ; lasts forever, doesnāt get dirty or need cleaning.
If youāre riding in the dry, offroad, there are better options.
