I wanted a WRX hatch when I was car shopping in 2017 but alas they stopped making them. Picked up a GTI with the manual instead and have been really happy with it. Love that I can put my XL bike in the back when most trucks have to have them hanging over the tailgate these days.
Color me impressed and in total awe of having racing royalty among us!
Killer! I love the dubs and nearly got a 2007 Volkswagen GTI Fahrenheit way back when.
So just a normal clubman not an S?
Bravo!
I’ve always wanted to get into a real track car to see if I had what it took.
When you’re behind the wheel, it’s all yours!
Yep. Slower the better. It’s got the nice radio which is actually the 1 other thing on the car I care about haha.
My '06 Mitsubishi Evo that’s been sitting collecting dust since I got into bikes a few years ago. Hard to believe I bought it bone stock almost 15 years ago now. Sadly, the cars I actually drive these days are pretty basic.
I’ve become pretty ambivalent to cars in recent years. If I didn’t already have my Z, I wouldn’t even think about trying to buy one. My daily is a 2013 Elantra that gets me from A to B comfortable enough. In fact, I really wish I didn’t “need” to own a car for the day-to-day stuff.
Additionally, my work commute is so short, my motorcycle wouldn’t even be halfway to warmed up if I rode it in. Plus, it takes me as long to gear up as would it to just get in my car and drive. So I haven’t taken that out yet this year.
I’ve got the opposite problem…my commute is ~50 miles each way and I’m in the office 4 days a week. With high gas prices and free charging at work, EV makes the most sense. I’ve sold all the “fun” stuff (except the Evo) and my wife and I each have an EV. Feels like I’m just driving an appliance now.
Since we are talking boring…
Here’s my “tow rig”:
Nothing exciting, but I do like that 2.4 turbo. I’m thinking once it’s paid off, I’m going to throw a catback on it. Maybe a hood scoop
And the tow rig that went along with it. Sold it last year to capitalize on the used car market. Ended up getting about $2500 less than I paid for it out the door brand new, 5 years old with 50k miles
Nice!
I bought a ‘13 2500 Laramie CTD back in 2020, kept it for a year or so before selling my 29’ trailer, then sold it back to the same dealer for a grand more.
I miss it, but I don’t miss 13mpg, DEF, $5/gal, etc. It had the 6.5’ bed; I very well may have kept it if it had the 8’ bed (my old ‘99 Ram CTD was an 8’er).
I had a 97 12valve with an 8ft bed, while living in an apt building with underground parking in Atlanta.. that was fun to get into a spot.
I’m unofficially shopping for a 18 CTD 2500 with the 6.5’ bed for our family hauler/shop tow vehicle. Last year of the manual! With the flares and bumpers from the AEV prospector kit, but not the lift. You can still fit the 40s with a little creative trimming.
I’ve also had the privilege of prepping, transporting, and campaigning a few autocross cars that I didn’t own over the years.
2014-2015 – STX E36 325i
2015 – STU Evo
2015-2016 – F-Street E92 M3
2016 – F-Street E46 M3
2016 Nationals – F-Prepared Evo (owner offered to sell to me for $20k and I sometimes wish I’d bought it, but didn’t need two project Evos at the time)
Who’s ready for some Rule 25?
I paid $500 for my old commuter, an ‘01 Civic coupe with a 5-speed manual and broken AC. I used it when moving to transport my S-Works Tarmac and Procaliber:
It didn’t pass inspection the following year, and I couldn’t be motivated to fix it so I sold it to a junker for more than I paid for it.
Not really.
Those are fun in their own way, but lack a “motor” which is the focus of this topic.
Ok… Here is the last great car I had:
In this household it had the best sound system, fastest/smoothest transmission off the line, best cornering and braking, and highest gas mileage around 33mpg at 75-80mph on the highways and byways of CA.
Fold the seats down and enough room for a 58cm road bike!
I always got the impression that until you got into the top level, and the better cars at that level, every race car was kinda junky and sloppy under the skin. Just a bunch of things that have been taken apart, crudely modified in some way, with lots of parts that fit together on paper, put back together rather quickly too many times….and rattling apart - like the software I work with. It’s probably nice just to have a car with all (most) the attention it needs… and fresh tires!
