Rocker Plates for Trainers

Just bought a Rocker Plate and did my first proper ride on it today. I can say only one thing with absolute certainty:

When one of the two inflatable bladders suddenly deflates while you’re riding, making the entire rocker plate, trainer and bike tilt suddenly to the left, it’s really quite an alarming sensation.

As I only rode 10 minutes before it happened, I’ll have to wait until the rubber ring is patched / replaced before saying anything else with any certainty.

Yikes, thay stinks. Sorry for the bad luck and such a short experience. Hope you get a replacement quickly and get back on for a proper ride.

Yes I haven’t named the manufacturer because to be fair to them, they immediately responded to my email and promised to send out replacement inflatable bladders.

I managed to patch the defective one and it’s currently holding when I jump up and down on the plate, so I might give it another tentative go this week, and just be ready to unclip quickly.

Those that are using rear only rocker plates, what front riser are you using? Currently have the cycle ops climbing blocks and they grip the wheel significantly allowing no sidewards lean. Haven’t purchased the rocker yet, just tying to research it.

I made my own riser, and it’s just flat. I have always disliked the curved and cradle style risers. I think a flash surface, and one that has a relatively low-friction surface is best. I use a chunk of smooth and shiny cardboard to allow some twist on the tire, without causing the tire to wear.

I have a yoga block. Wonder if that would work

Yeah that might. Getting a good height that matches or is higher than the rear axle height is all you need.

Sorry if this has been covered. Been reading through (again) and cant find the answer.

I plan to use 3 vibration isolators down the middle as a solid pivot, and then either dense foam massage balls or inflatable playground balls. However, the tallest easily available vibration isolators are around 50mm and most balls are larger than this (with Chad suggesting 5 inch or 7 inch). Is it just a case of cutting the correct size hole in the top plate until the balls protrude through enough to offset this difference in height?

I dont want the ball pressure to be dictated by the height of the vibration isolators, if that makes sense?

First, I recommend about 75mm total inner height for a typical rocker width, to allow around 7* lean angle per side. To do this with only 50mm vibe mounts, you want to add spacers like additional deck material cut to small squares or circles (like using a hole saw) to place on the ends of the vibe mounts. That gets you the rough 75mm height.

Seconds, the 4-7" balls fit fine without holes. I have never drilled holes, and just place my balls close to the edge with the valve hole sideways to allow for inflation. This is nice, because you can fine tune the lateral placement from the pivot axis, to adjust feel. Drilling holes locks you into a location and is largely unnecessary, IMO.

The height differential between the tall balls and the deck space just “works”. Start by having the balls very deflated. Slide them between the deck, and inflate. The pressure and surface contact “locks” the balls in place with friction. Does that make sense?

really helpful answer, as always. Thanks Chad!

Lifeline Rocker Plate back up on sale again. I jumped this time, having procrastinated a bit too long last time.

Thanks @4ibanez for the review.

I got one in their last sale. Functionally speaking I can’t fault it and it’s a bargain. The tart in me would have preferred black, and maybe I’ll sticker over the logo

Haha yeah, black would be cooler alright😁. I can’t wait to give it a go, back in lockdown here - anything to make the turbo more engaging.

That went back on sale quick. Enjoy!

Finally joined the smart trainer club, no rocker yet.

Coming from a Kurt rock n roll I actually felt a bit seasick without the sway, maybe It’s time to build one of these.

Yeah, if you become accustomed to trainer motion, going back to rigid is a really odd feeling, at least for me. Helps reinforce how unnatural a fixed setup really is.

So after many months of thinking about it, I finally got round to buying a rocker. I don’t have the time, tools or space to make one, so I was pretty happy to be able to just throw some money at the problem.
I went for the Omnirocker, which gives side to side and fore-aft movement. I’ve only done one 1 hour zwift ride on it so far, my initial impressions are very good. The movement, especially the fore-aft movement, is a bit disconcerting to start, but makes riding the turbo much more engaging and a much more comfortable experience. It will be interesting to see how it impacts on my structured sessions, and whether it makes a difference (initially anyway) to my numbers.
The build quality appears to be really good and the finish on the omnirocker is lovely, so I’m really happy with it so far.

Great to see another rocker user here. I am always impressed with the apparent build quality of the Omni Rockers. They are really well done.

Let us know what you think after some more rides and workouts . Happy rocking

Looks like you measure the fit exactly right :+1: about 2 inches to spare?

Just set up my lifeline rocker I got on sale. Some questions for the people that have that rocker or any rocker.

  1. Do you use a mat under the rocker? Right now I have my mat under it but it isn’t as wide as the rocker, I have it as centered as I can but Im wondering if this is a problem.
  2. Does anybody use a pump with a gauge and if so what’s a good starting pressure. I tried to get it as low as I could with it still being balanced but having a hard time getting it dialed in perfectly.
  3. Is it normal to have one side inflated more to have it balanced? Not sure if I have the balls in 100% correctly or maybe depending on the trainer if its normal to have one ball inflated more than other to make it balance. For reference I’m using a Kickr Core on mine.

Any tips of people who got there’s dialed in perfectly would be appreciated, thanks!
