Bad technique, sure but a slip or curling the edge of the tape up means redoing it.
Hmmm, makes me feel like a bad ass?! An opportunity to do something physical after working out with a keyboard and touchpad all day?! Kung Fu Panda dreamz of a progression leading to mastering the Wuxi Finger Hold? Yes, it’s a Kung Fu Panda delusion
It really depends on tire-wheel combination. I rarely have to use levers on non-tubeless setups, but my current tubeless (Prime RR-38s + Schwalbe Pro Ones) one would have to be able to crush coconuts with their bare hands to get them on.
where do you apply the hairspray and why?
I’m flabbergasted by the number of people who don’t own an air compressor or one of those slave-tank floor pumps. I have 4 different tubeless rims in this house and used 9-different tubeless tires that I can remember and never once had to do anything other than hit the presta-valve with the air compressor.
No compressor I can see if you have no other use for one, and if you are just starting out with tubeless and not sure, a pressure tank or pressure tank pump combo is a pricey addition on top of what you’ve just put into tires, tape, valves and sealant if you are not sure tubeless is in the long term. Once you make the commitment to tubeless, then it becomes an essential part of the tool kit.
$60, even cheaper on ebay.
I understand, more money on more money though. However, you can now blow water off the chain when you clean the bike.
Some Questions to the forum.
I have been riding with tubeless for more than 10 years.
Started with 23 mm Hutchinson Fusion 3 and lately moved to Fusion 5, 25 mm.
My wheels are Fulcrum Racing Zero 2-way, a dedicated Tubeless wheel that does NOT require any change or sealing to use the Tubeless tires.
All this time, i bought tires on-line using ebay, Amazon etc’
In the last few months, i cant find “Tubeless tire”, all i see from Hutchinson are “Road Tubeless Ready”.
Few questions:
-
What is the difference between “Road tubeless” & “Road **Tubeless Ready”?
As far as i understand, “Road Tubeless ready” tires require a sealant to create an airtight seal…
But can i use them? Will it be a mess to load a new tire on the wheel? (today, with “Tubeless” i can use or not use seal - the tire will sit on the wheel with air without any problem - i must say that i only ride with seal inside) -
What happened to the “regular” tubeless tires by Hutchinson? All available tires (on-line) are “Road Tubeless Ready”. They stopped manufacturing them?
-
If Hutchinson Fusion is not an option, i would be happy to receive some recommendations for “Road tubeless” in the same price range and level.
Thx
Gil
- In my experience, no difference, use sealant.
- Hutchinson road tubeless tires have a miserable track record with me, all blister or the tread delaminates.
- For training, Bontrager AW2 “hard case”. “Hard case” is a bit of a misnomer, the tire rides similar in feel to my Corsas, no percievable difference in grip but haven’t low-side crashed/test the limits, ran the 28mm tire. Was cooking on a few descents in Albuquerque on them, felt good and did not miss the Corsas on the race wheels. I also like Schwalbe One and I’m itching to try the tubeless Crosa 2.0 and maybe Rubino.
This may be a dumb question. My friend gave me two sets of tires. Hutchinson Fusion 5 Galactik 23s Tubeless and Sworks Turbo 24s Tubeless. I don’t think my wheelset is tubeless compatible as it is a chinese “no-name” carbon wheelset. Can I just run tubes in these tires? Is there a major downside to doing this?
@paulrattew
Tyre plugs are the best! I’ve used Dynaplugs and Sahmurai Sword, works so well. I actually rode a tyre for 3 months after sticking a plug in it. The plug became so part of the tyre, you couldn’t even find it. Held air better than a tube. Tyre plugs FTW!
You can.
Only downside would be they can be harder to mount.
- “Road Tubeless Ready” doesn’t have a butyl liner, so you MUST use sealant for them to no leak air. “Road Tubless” have a butyl liner, so sealant is not needed (but recommended).
Just noticed that the Vittoria Corsa G+ 2.0 TLR have now been tested - and are faster than GP5000 TL across the board.
I have same experience with Dynaplugs. They just work, become part of the tire and make having to add a tube to ride home following a puncture a very low probability event.
I had my first puncture a week ago, didn’t seal. I had to put two dynaplugs in, the first didn’t quite fill the cut. Got me home fine. I swapped the tyre since they were on for a mixed surface event initially. They do seem to work very well, I wasn’t sure if I’d trust it long term, so that’s useful feedback.
Stan’s seemed completely ineffective. I’m looking into alternatives. I was going to put more Stan’s in after swapping the tyres, but could not find my new bottle. I had some Continental sealant lying around, so I’ve used that for now. This blocked its own nozzle while trying to squeeze it out into the syringe.
Anyone have experience with Caffelatex? I notice they have small pouches. This could be useful, for taking on a long ride to top up if significant sealant loss occurs.
I mix by myself uiing the bontrager recipe,.
2 parts water
1 part liquid latex
1 parts ethylen glycol
2-3 tbs static grass ( I use only 1 tbs)
1:14
With the static grass it seal very efficient, but i not last as long as e.g. stan’s. I replace it every 3 month.
Has anyone heard of or experienced Tubeless tire blow out or “burping” air? I live in a mountainous area and am scared of a tire blowing off the rim while high speed descending around switchbacks. I just converted to 28mm Conti GP 5000 TL on ENVE 3.4 disc wheels. The tires mounted pretty easily for me and sealed with compressor and 30ml sealant. I rode them once around neighborhood just to check them out and they feel amazing. Am I just being paranoid?
With the Enve 3.4 AR, the Conti 5000 TL’s are listed as incompatible due to the hookless bead design of the rim. There have been reports of the tire unseating while riding and Enve’s own testing resulting in the incompatible listing.
https://www.enve.com/en/products/ses-3-4-ar/
I was looking at the Enve 4.5 AR’s, but they are in the same boat and not compatible with Conti GP 5000 TLs, so a no go for me.
I do not have the AR, but the standard SES 3.4. I couldn’t find any information about compatibility with tires for that rim. Any ideas?
