I get frequent estimates, multiple times a month. Sometimes after simple zone2 endurance rides.
“Data can be gathered during a guided test specifically designed to record the data needed to detect your FTP, or it can be calculated from normal running activities that include enough quality heartbeat data from each zone.”
…
And you need HRV for it to work.
Ok. Doesn’t seem like much of an improvement on 95% of 20 AP. Guess they final found the correlation between running and cycling VO2 Max.
Like I said, sometimes I’ll get an ftp estimate after a simple endurance ride. Or some tempo intervals. People on this forum are pumped about AI FTP. This is similar but uses HRV, HR, and power. There are some other interesting and useful features.
This feature has been around awhile. My 530 is over 3.5 years old. It simply works for me, all you need is a decent HRM and a power meter.
It’s a substantial improvement over 95% of 20-min, because it’s working all the time. After I take a season break, I’ll get 4-6 updates a month. Lately it’s been 2-3 a month.
I never use my 530 for running. It’s possible? You sure about how the data is derived? Mine pop up using the standard 95% of 20 min AP and VO2 defaults using the 5 min MMP formula. I don’t run.
Why are you bringing up running?
Last year I did 275W for 32+ minutes, 20-min power was 277 average and 278 normalized. Edge 530 gave me an estimate of 264W. No 95% of anything.
That is about 10W low (4%).
3 weeks ago if I look at my 90-day power curve, 20-min power was 252W. After a workout my Edge 530 estimated ftp at 264W, on that workout my best 20-min was 254W normalized and 238W average. No 95% of anything.
That is about 10W low (4% low) compared to an estimate last week, after a 20-min effort.
You have to enable “Menu > My Stats > FTP > Enable Auto Calculation” for that to work. I’ve also properly set my training level (forgot what its called). And set my HRmax. Wearing a Garmin dual HRM.
No this is not correct but commonly posted.
I think they’ve upped the threshold for it triggering but yes simple Endurance rides were triggering it. For me, it tended last year to get triggered for 1.5-2h chaingangs (pacelines) at circa 70-75% and 2 hour TTs. It’s not been triggered this year but Ive not done any consistent hour + efforts yet, I think that what it works on.
Pretty much exactly my stats. Garmin has me in the 220’s and TR has me in the 260’s
