Remove SRAM threaded chainring without tool

Hi

is it possible to remove SRAM threaded chainring without special SRAM tool with e.q. cassete removal tool or something?

If you are talking about the XX mtb power meter chainring I was able to get mine off with a chain whip, but this was when it was new and hadn’t been ridded (i.e. “tightened”) yet. Just make sure you take out the little safety stop first.

You should be able to do it with a towel, tshirt, strap wrench, clamp https://www.lowes.com/pd/IRWIN-QUICK-GRIP-24-in-Heavy-Duty-One-Handed-Bar-Clamp/1003168270 , chainwhip with some chainlinks added, etc.

Tried with a cassette tool but not even close to unscrew it…

Bumping to see if anyone has had luck with this using a chain whip?

In a pinch, I bet I could get it off by putting the crank arm in a vise and then tapping the ring off with a hammer and punch, but it would likely bugger up the crank arm and you might bend a tooth hammering on it. The proper tool can be had for ~$60 and makes it simple, cost of doing business if you run threaded rings. I guess if you don’t change rings often, maybe find someone local that will let you borrow the tool and buy them a six pack or something.

I had reservations going with the new style threaded spider/rings due to the proprietary design, but no regrets after running it for a year on my XC bike (and switching rings 20+ times). No more stripped or cranked chainring bolts and no risk of a bolt coming loose. Downside is the cost, rings are spendy.

Not too long after the post I just bit the bullet :joy:
