Having recovered from a broken femur my advice on the psychological side is as follows:
- Focus on short term goals - my first was just spinning my legs for 5 minutes on the turbo with no resistance and then later it was my first outdoor ride.
- Celebrate the successes on the journey. If you use Social Media let your friends know when you have achieved a milestone. I certainly received lots of messages of support and I remember feeling really good after my first ride
- Don’t test until you are well into your recovery, judge your rides more by feel. The focus is on recuperation not performance
- Make sure your plan is flexible and you don’t feel forced into a pre-defined schedule.
