One of the locals in our town is doing it outside…freakin’ hats off to him. Almost everyday since it started has been in the 40’s, usually with light to steady rain.
That is a hard nope from me….
I’ve done about half of my miles outside. One 3.5 hour ride in the rain. Not horrible but not the most fun. Today started out below 40F so that was a bit rough as it took me a good 30 minutes to truly warm up.
Another 100 down.
20 with the Jacques robopacer zwift festive500 group ride. silly ride, never even saw jacques, the group bolted and I rode normalized 295w for 45 minutes (.87IF). But I do love a badge (or whatever) that 20 miles got me the official strava badge as well.
the other 80miles I rode with coco. Looking to finish tomorrow with another 100 miles for my zwiftive500 mile challenge. It is going to be interesting to play with adaptive stuff after tomorrow for sure.
110km to go. Doing in Bangkok at the skylane (happy healthy bike lane) Very hot after 9am about 35 Celsius and the air is pretty polluted atm.
Yeah, I didn’t see a robo pacer on the Rapaha 500 ride yesterday either. Zwift events are always a mess
I’d love to get a gravel ride in, but it’s been raining nonstop in Michigan.
98 miles (159k) to go for me. I’d love to knock a metric off today, but legs are pretty tired. 651 TSS since Sunday. About double my usual. Sorry AI
some Canadians would kill for 40s weather now
I will finish tomorrow with 450km in 6 days. So not gonna complete the full challenge but mentally I did complete it in my mind. It was not a goal I absolutely want to achieve so no big deal. A good aerobic week is more important as goal ;-).
good luck every on chasing the km’s or miles…
IMO, from a training perspective, it is all about logging in a solid week of endurance riding….450km achieves that, IMO. Well done.
Finished up today. Mostly a normal training week so far to do so, but good reason for some longer back to back endurance rides. Ventured outside for first time today as weather meant to be good….of course it poured with rain next couple of days a mix of outdoors and indoors so will probably finish up around the 750k mark.
Good job everyone
Well done! 90km to go for me which I should tick off tomorrow though might deliberately leave myself just short so I have an excuse to go for a nice easy Sunday gravel ride.
Done it with one indoor ride (it was raining and windy and none of my family wanted to watch the new Indiana Jones movie with me so thought it was a good use of trainer time!), one day off (Christmas) and 2.5-3 hour Z2 outdoor rides all the other days which is pretty much perfect training for me this time of year as builds the volume without taking too much out of me. Definitely helps motivation having the challenge as the weather has been pretty bad here so along with all the family stuff and a bit of over indulging it would be very easy otherwise to just skip a few days instead of using the time off work to get in a nice solid training block.
Been sitting high 20s to low 30s since start of winter (highs of -5C to +3C), we’re not complaining!
62km left for me. Meeting some people on Sunday for a gravel ride that just happens to match up with the exact Kms remaining. Will either take tomorrow off completely or do a 30 minute recovery spin.
Legs and behind have definitely felt this volume which is more than my normal.
A litlte story. When I first tried the festive500 I was pretty new to cycling, but committed. I’d done some long rides (70 miles!) and commuted to work regularly (18 miles each way). I never actually completed the challenge that year, 400kms in my body just gave in. my knees blew up. It was excruciating. And it took 6 months to get back on the bike regularly.
The next go round I nailed the 500, I bought the jersey! (I was so proud, the following year I crashed hard in that jersey, broke my collarbone and that jersey is now in tatters because they cut it off of me ha)
The next year I went full meme and did 3 > 100 mile rides. The following year I wanted to do it in one go but got sick and was sick for 5 weeks with a terrible cough. I ended up doing half of it in one day instead of the whole thing, and I just shut it down after that. That was december 2019.
I fell off hard (all of my cycling was based around 40-50 miles of commuting every day.) I turned 50 and thought, this is the year I’m finally getting slow.
I’ve been slowly crawling out of that pit, and nearly all of it inside. Call it angst, call it convenience, call it my natural barn sour state. In any case. This is all pre-amble to say that I did finish the festive500 this year. All on zwift.
Back to meme-ing it with 500miles instead of Ks. Partially because it is easy riding at 25mph in zwift, and partially because why not. The 1st,2nd,3rd day were pretty much fun the whole time, even the 4th was fun for the first hour. The 5th day. Just a slog, the last hour I kept mumbling to myself, why, WHY? haha. I considered going outside to ride this weekend, it’s raining, and I’m oncall, which…I did spend many an hour huddled under an awning in the rain in my cycling gear connecting over hotspot to fix some problem when I commuted every day by bike. But then. I’ve done that. I paid my ‘riding in the rain’ dues, and even enjoyed it a bit.
I mentioned this in the “what did I learn thread”. I feel like it’s worth saying in this one. I really thought that turning 50 was some ‘wall’. I learned it wasn’t, and other fast > 50 (or 60) people are just smirking at me. What can I say I was wfh and no riding for over a year. Believing you can do something may not be the biggest challenge, but it is the first.
I’ve come to think of myself as ascending the descent. And maybe the festive played a part, another chapter in the game of bike.
Here’s to 2024, may it bring you health and happiness on the bike (if that’s your jam) and/or off it.
596km on Zwift after the BMTR 100 today….and 293 “trainer” miles, so I only need 17 trainer miles tomorrow to hit 500km / 310miles on both metrics.
Planning on the 3R Endurance 100km ride to finish it off, but I may not do the whole thing…will see how I feel once I’m on the bike. Today was a bit harder than I planned. Started off just sitting in in a group of ~100 riders around position 200, but by the time we finished, there were only 5 of us left so we were working pretty hard.
I imagine there must be a market for replica jerseys of these? Someone must make them?
I thought maybe if I sent them my sad story they’d send me a replacement. But I never even tried. I just zoomed in and saw the writing on the collar, glory through suffering. Hahaha.
Done with mine today, did each of the three Rapha 500 group rides (Cat B) on Zwift and the rest as TR workouts:
Those Zwift rides were no joke, not a single one of them was at the advertised pace
Wrapped this up today. Weather didn’t want to play nice this year, and did every single k on Zwift. Rain, then Fog, followed by Snow, just left no room to squeeze any outside miles in.
I’m shocked. Shocked I tell ya!
