Pro/Elite training

MvdP posting his recent rides with power. Interesting. Slowly ramping up volume, this is base building. After some very low intensity rides early Feb he’s moving to the typical pro endurance zone. And there is absolutely no “I’m not allowed to cross 300W/LT1/whatever”.

@sryke Have you pulled in any of Sepp Kuss’s files in that I am forgetting? He is another JV but they may be teeing him up as a mountain domestique or a team leader in his own right.

There are quite a few extracts from SK in this thread. In the end they don’t look different to any of the other TdF riders.

@sryke You gotta set up a tip jar or something

No joke, id toss in

MvdP, carrying on with simply making miles. Somhow he didn’t get the memo on strict intensity control these days, every ride so much time >300W. Some people on Twitter say that elites should not ride consistently at AeT/LT1 because it it metabolically so demanding. I guess MvdP did not get the memo either, almost all the recent rides have the peak of the power distribution just below 300W. That’s a lot of food :spaghetti: :spaghetti: :spaghetti:

if somehow you can incorporate the HR data…that would be awesome. Some riders like MVDP let us peak into his HR Max (~190)…then we could put the strain in context.

This comment you made here is clearly seen with MVP recent Strava uploads, he has barely done any real structure, he has just been riding around and the heart rate to power ratio has dramatically improved a clear example of “either you have it or not”.

Yes.

“Ride lots” is still the best training program

Exactly my take away from this thread;

Ride Lots
+
Do Some “Stuff”

Screw genetics, when I’m reincarnated I want parents that put $100M into my trust fund!

alejandro valverde for the win

Exactly, go back to Nils VdP’s training in the ‘aerobic season’ - lots of consistency, not much structure

What is structure? At the scale of a build up to the season or to an important race like the TdF there is a clear structure. Individual sessions may not look as structured.

A prime example is Wiggins’ description of his build to the TdF win. The purpose of the training camps, the “content” of the training camps. There is a clear plan behind it, a structure. And since the mainly train <FTP/CP things like how to structure intervals isn’t that important anyway.

Tim Podlogar, nutritionist for Bora-Hansgrohe and research fellow at the University of Birmingham, joins Kolie for a conversation. Just a few of the topics covered are what makes Slovenian riders so good, what lab tests are useful and for whom, low-carb rides, and why substrate use is not adaptation. Nutrition topics include fructose, “fat loading,” the role of supplements like creatine, bicarbonate, and beta-alanine. Also discussed are things like responsibility for our media’s influence, and the pressures, dangers, and nuances of MDPI and scientific publication.

I enjoyed this one, some interesting discussion on threshold definitions and on research quality rather than what he’s doing with the B-H WT team though.

I think the TLDR on this as far as ‘what he’s doing with the pros’ was, 1) still getting them up to around that 120g/hr carb intake (same as the interview with Robert Gorgos also of B-H on That Triathlon Show a while back, that one actually went into a bit more practical ‘what do you do all day?’ stuff, worth a listen.) 2) using fructose not just maltodextrin to get them up to that intake.

Tim is an interesting follow on Instagram if you are on there, he’s always posting new studies, and talking through sports science. I’ve learned a lot from there.

Agree, and he is seriously strong on the bike as well… which makes it even more fun

MvdP: Feb - Mar 5

For the graph on the right in your uploads that’s essentially TIZ, correct? For instance on the top ride it looks like 26-28 or so minutes at 300, and 25min a 380 or thereabouts, am I interpreting this correctly? With the vast majority of the time coasting at 0 watts.

I can see what looks like some “structure” in many of the rides but they appear to be like you’ve said before “stuff”.

So when I look at these files and I see on Strava what the riders FTP is, I can roughly guestimate what zone he’s working in? Is that what you do when you look at these?
