I just finished a workout that had two form sprints at the beginning and two at the end of the workout. These are low power high cadence efforts. I love them because I can spin really fast, but I run into a problem during the workout.
Either my power meter or the TR app stops reading my power meter data when I spin at a high RPM. I’ll start the drill, the meter will read up to 170-ish, and then all power and cadence stops reading. It happens every time I do the drill.
I know I’m spinning above 172 because I can feel my spin still going up as the readings cut out.
I don’t really care about the max cadence necessarily, I know I can spin fast, but I’m worried that it’s going to throw off my workout data. when it cuts out it will take a bit for the readings to pick back up even if I’m pedaling, like it takes to the point where the smart trainer slows down enough to provide resistance to my pedals again, so it looks like I stopped and then I’m at a super low power and cadence.
Is there something I can do to resolve or mitigate this issue?
I have a stages single sided crank arm power meter, a wahoo kicker core trainer, and I was using erg mode. At the end of the workout I switched to standard to see if that would make a difference, but I ended up switching back to erg mode before the last form sprint b/c standard making it hard to get to the power number that the other drill was asking for.
What are you using for cadence? The PM should bo good, but if using the trainer for cadence, they can get flaky at high cadences and spinning because they estimate cadence based on detecting two distinct power pulses per rev, which might not be so distinct when spinning at high cadence.
I expect you’ve reached the max cadence for your power meter. I expect, but could be wrong, that by the time you reach that cadence, your interval will almost be over, so I wouldn’t worry about it.
I’m using the PM for cadence afaik. I didn’t see another option. I do have it in the mode where it links the PM and the trainer so the PM’s power informs the smart trainer, so I’m assuming the cadence is also coming through the power meter.
Yeah I’m not worried about the cadence cap, I’m more worried about the readings dropping out to the point where it looks like I stop pedaling half way through the form sprint. By the time it stops reading during the 10 second sprint I still have 5 seconds to go and then there is a good additional 10~20 seconds where I’m pedaling but no or super low readings are coming though. That’s the part I’d like to mitigate if I can.
