Outside workouts- chasing averages

Better results as in ftp bumps after a block or two of outside workouts. Also feeling stronger and more fit. So both objective and subjective.

So glad to see this question and the replies. Tried my first workout in Richmond Park and having never done power training before I spent way more time looking at the Garmin than I’d like, trying to get close to the planned power. Good to see it’s not such an issue, and even tough I don’t have an indoor trainer, there’s no way I’d ride indoors in the UK Summer - no fun in that for me!

Interestingly, I also find it harder to ride at power (and gauge power) downhill - I guess I’m just much more used to coasting there. Even a slight downhill at ftp power and I go way faster than I normally do in general.

I only just got a power meter - I guess you get a better sense of the power you’re riding after a while?

I am 6 months into using a PM and feel like I am just starting to understand what zones feel like to my legs outside. I do not pay much attention inside, but going by feeling now I am correct more than I am wrong when it comes to what zone I feel like I am in the last couple of weeks when I look at my Bolt.

It gets easier as you get more experience riding with a PM. You get better at the basic skills - understanding what a specific watt range/zone feels like; knowing your personal range of situations where you’re prone to getting off target, making small rather than large adjustments so you’re not chasing your tail and anticipating and adjusting quickly to variables such as small grade changes or wind.
