Official Swimming thread

My previusly mentioned friend…
has 2 kids…
His youngest, is 12? maybe 13?
The kid is on the heavier side and doesnt want to do sports…
The other day at the pool my friend challenged him to a 50y race…

the boy pull a 35s 50…
The dad did a 32 all out effort!

so yeah… there is a talent component is swimming… a talent I do not have

Same here!!!

PRs
25m pool no jump and no flip turns
50m 34s
100m 1:14
200m 2:51
400m 5:57

My best 70.3 swim with a “garmin watch 1900m compliant course” and no favorable flows at all was high 29 - wetsuit, sea water.

My country (Portugal) has no tradition in high level swimming so I typically get to T1 on the first 25% in a local half distance, and top 10% on my AG.

I have a 70.3 in 3 weeks time (wetsuit + fresh water). If I can pull an under 37 minutes swim after being so much time away from the pool, I would be very very happy!

@Nprazeres Nice! Since in this forum I see 4 & 5 W/Kg (im only at 2.2), people stating they ran ok with a 21 min or faster 5k (my PR is 28:05), my swim PRs (mind you 20+ years ago): 50m - 24.2s, 100m - 52s, any thing longer was way too long and I refused :). Fastest Sprint .5 mile - 13:15. A couple years ago, the night before a 1 mile race, my wife told me she signed my up. Hadn’t swum in a year did it in 29:52. Before covid, I managed to get my 50yd to 29s and 100yd to 1:31. Darn age and weight.

Nice!
You got the hardest of the disciplines down!

Swimming is by far the hardest to train and the hardest to get good at after certain age…
I think humans were not made for swimming!

thats what happens when you atart at the of 2 and essentially swim until 18, with a couple years break. That is why a love sprint tri…I can actually compete given my sloooow run.

Edit: Longer tris just look miserable with the run. My PR for straight half-marathon is 2:11.

I think Olympic distance is probably the best for people who swim fast!

You can get a lot of distance from the pack on a quick swim!

I know this is a swimming thread but what are your thoughts about your lack of running speed?

Today I practice right side breathing…

OH MY!
It was super hard…
That was an very unhealthy amount of pool water i drank this morning!
:face_vomiting:

Ah, I’m jealous. I love short course racing but my swim is more of a limiter there. It’s a lot easier to be competitive in a 70.3 with a MOP swim and a strong run, but when it comes to a sprint there’s nowhere to hide.

I feel like you get to be either a swim person or a run person, and if you’re both then god help us all.

Like they all say, just believe in the process!

Does anyone know what protocol works best to track improvements?

I will start doing it the same week as i do the ramp test…as a way to track progress, if any …

Thanks!

I like to use the CSS testing method.

Basically its a 400m TT followed by some very easy swimming and rest for 5 min, then a 200m TT. You can then plug these into a calculator to get you Critical Swim Speed (CSS); or you can just compare your 200/400m times to previous tests.

I like this test because I feel it’s long enough to test endurance, without having to do 1500m TT.

The number laps I can swim underwater in my 38 foot long pool

Also CSS here but currently is distance at probable non wet suit IM pace before the first cramp!

I am currently at 900 meters. 2900 to go!

I will retest today!

For the record.
1650m until cramping yesterday.
25m pool - pace 1:48/100m

I have a 70.3 in 10 days. Hopefully I will pass the 1900 mark without cramping until then.

You know I’ve never seen much change in CSS tests.

I do use CSS but I think my main set 100m times, or a continuous 1900m is what I actually keep an eye on.

Last time i did the test was 2019…

400 8:17.9

200 3:55.0

That gave me a css of 2:11.
I have never swim a 2:11 on ANY race ive done…
Probably because I am not comfortable with OW group swims…

So living in Canada and being in Onterrible, pools still aren’t open. I’m saving money to sign up to master’s as soon as it opens (i’m hoping september but not holding my breathe …see what i did there).
At this point i wonder if i’ll even remember how to swim. I’ve been working on my running and cycling in the meantime, and my crawling and carries, dragging, has most definitely helped with my shoulder mobility and strength but i wonder if it’ll be enough.

I hope that outdoor pools open soon (supposed to open in less than 2 weeks according to their framework) but the booking system for them might still be a $hitshow of waking up at 6AM to try to find a spot a week from that day. I really need the guidance of a coach to git’gud

that sucks…
I didn’t swim for about 4-5 months… it sucked badly for maybe a week or 2.
Its surprising how quick you get your swimming back!

Hope Canada reopen soon…
we are planning a trip to the Fall later in the summer…

Very nice! The falls are a great attraction

I haven’t been in a pool since March last year. There were some opportunities that were missed and also, cold lake ontario was also an option but it’s just not my jam at my level. Fingers crossed
