New 'Zwift Ride' Smart Frame (June 12, 2024)

I think it was in 2020 during covid i was thinking about it… I was looking for the pictures but cant find any…

My idea was VERY similar to the one you describe… weight was no issue, so a 50# of welded tubes would have done…
Where my idea was slightly more challenging was that I would have tried to make the distance between the handle bar and the saddle adjustable and the the top tuble angle also adjustable. The point was to be able to mimic your race day frame dimensions and angles (plus be able to use road/TT cockpit)

Yeah, this one I can’t find used a similar adjustment method as seen on most spin bikes. Mega range seatpost length along with fore-aft. Similar setup on the bars. All welded steel so not pretty, but functional, without the complexity or need to make “frame” size adjustments.

Someone needs to do this. I would pay money for something like this! metal (painted to avoid corrosion). If I was good with metal stuff I would do this… but I just write code for a living…

But does it work with TrainerRoad? /s

Yes, it can work with TR (or other apps) in ERG mode at the moment.

The non-adjustable handlebar width irks me as well. But looking at the pictures in more detail, it appears that you could replace the handlebar with the handlebar of your choice

Oh wow, wasn’t expecting that.

@gpl covers this in his youtube video. since it has standard diameter bar clamping area he’s going to swap his out for some cheap carbon aero handlebars with some flare to them.

FOUND IT!

Seems they are likely out of production, but the concept and function are all as mentioned.

It’s exactly the same as when they introduced the Kickr Core One for Zwift with the virtual shifting. That is the same trainer here and keeps that functionality, so it has a bit more reach than Zwift, for ERG users at least.

This is what I’m really hoping: if Zwift does open up the virtual shifting API, and it is adopted by other apps (e.g., TR, Fulgaz, etc.), then other companies produce smart bike frames. My ultimate would be an InsideRide E-Flex Smart Frame

Honestly, one of the coolest things about this introduction, and a true “V8” moment IMO, are the WB cages.

Well TR doesn’t need virtual shifting…you could effectively run the Zwift One Cog on any trainer now w/ TR (as long as it is in ERG mode).

Ultimately, Zwift is gonna want to sell as many frames as they can, which would mean opening up the software at some point, IMO. My guess is that there is a period of exclusivity for Wahoo for now.

Looks like Gates has used a tensioner for belt on full suspension bikes. I could see something similar here, but the wrap to clear the top side of the chainstay could be too tight of a bend radius / angle?

Another example:

Did they delay virtual shifting on V5 Kickr becuase of this launch?

I get you can use TR solely in ERG mode, which is what I do most of the time. But there are times when I want to use Resistance mode, like last week when I had a workout that included all out 30 second efforts.

In that case, you won’t be able to use TR until Zwift opens up the software to other trainer suppliers.

same… I would love to virtual shift in TR… I even suggest this to nate some years ago (some kind of BT connector to allow change resistance without shifting IRL)

Perhaps I’m missing something but what’s the seat tube angle and seatpost offset? I don’t think I can find it anywhere but as they are fixed it’d be good to know.

But it seems to be a package deal, so sticking a pulley on the Core would seem to be no big deal.

One thing that gets me is why make it a ‘strap on bike’ for the Core, and not sell it separately, Is it a ‘universal’ bike that others could use on their own (non-Wahoo) trainer? It seems like this product, perhaps, wasn’t fully thought out? People are going to be looking at this component of the announcement and wonder why it’s tied to the Core. (I do)

It could be the first (name brand) trainer specific bike FRAME system sold in the US. An interesting idea. I’ve heard of riders that have purchased naked frames and have built their own ‘Ride’ frame… And also bought a lower end full bike for trainer use exclusively.

It’s an interesting product, the devil is in the details. Will they sell it by itself. Is there a frame/Ride tie in that would stop it from being used on, say, a Tacx 2T?
