Can’t comment on NZ but having moved to a new country last year, I’ve found the heat maps pretty useful to identify routes and then double checking with Google street view to make sure I’m not heading somewhere totally unsuitable. Particularly useful for finding routes through busier towns where there are no easy ways around. Not so keen on the automated route creation but it gives some possibilities if you’re willing to spend the time editing the route to your own preferences.
