New gear priorities, what would you choose?

ohhh i like, even if i just get the power meter, i could have my power display on the watch and just chill in z2 for some of my training volume!

so i guess in that order i’ll get
powermeter
better watch (that supports workouts) with the mount
mayyyybe a cycling computer

Check Wahoo’s website they occasionally have refurbished units at a discount. Otherwise I’ve always had good luck with ebay buying used items like computers and power meters. I picked up a single sided stages for I think 250ish USD a few years ago. I got powertap P1S for clever training on sale for under 300 last year as well.

Hard choice as a watch and PM seems like the most obvious but… if it were me I would keep your watch, get a used stages or 4iiii left crank and a Garmin 520 or Wahoo Bolt.

I have a F6X and 530 and cannot imagine looking at a watch screen doing outdoor workouts.

Obviously a bunch depends on the budget.

So another update… posted a LF/ISO post and got a guy who’s willing to sell his Garmin Vector 2 pedals (dual sensing) at a really economical price, an offer i can’t refuse. He’s also the friend of a friend so i was able to make sure he wasn’t a shady individual.

Now it dragged me down a deep rabbit hole where i discovered the my watch (vivoactive HR) can’t pair with power devices so i’ll probably be looking at getting an edge computer because the angle calibration on the vector 2 seems to only be possible on those devices (i could try risking it with a multisport watch but i prefer not to)
The great news is that i’ll have no excuse to not do structured workouts when im riding outside…the other good news is that i’d be staying within budget even by getting the 2 items.

The bad news is i’ll still have “sucky” swim tracking. Oh well, can’t have it all

Swim tracking is overrated.

but how do i know if i got faster in the open waterrrrrrr

i’ll worry about that next year i guess.

For anyone who wants to know, go the vector 2 pedals, and got an edge 810 (at a very competitive price, from a neighbor of mine), so i’m set!

Had my first ride with them this morning, hadn’t torqued the pedals to spec yet so i give or take some of the data that i got… overall seems like im all over the place power-wise. My left leg is definitely weaker than me right leg and my cadence on the road is a lot slower than on the trainer. Now i gotta do a ramp test with them to start training again (once i smooth out my power output)

Make sure that you are using some power smoothing on your head unit! 3, 5, or 10s seem to be the most popular options (Garmins have 3 but not 5). if you are looking at the instantaneous power read out then you will probably have a hard time sticking to a target.

yeah i got the 3s power field.

i had WAYYYY too many screens going on when i really just need 2 i think. so i cleaned it up.

i’ll probably create another profile for TR outdoor workouts once i feel comfortable
