My first 10 mile TT

Awesome man, thanks for the feedback and article link!

I’d have liked to push a bit harder on the headwind sections, but I was running out of gas. I blame the tractor that was blocking the road for that. Took me out of my flow and had me sprint to get back up to speed.

Sorry to say, but I can get 35km/h on my MTB…on the road…for 16-17km :)) (with road tires).
I think you can get much faster with that power with dialing your position on the bike + better tires and correct pressure for your weight…maybe go tubeless.

Just checked and my NP for the effort was 239W, with an AVG of 238. So not too far off, but not perfect.

That is as as close to perfect as possible. Well done. I think my first TT had a difference of about 20 watts because I was having these mini breaks every so often. I didn’t think it made any difference but it does.

After lots of mail contact with both Velotec and Nopinz, I placed the order for the Nopinz Pro 1 Road Race suit. Their contact over mail was excellent. Size recommendation was an S. Ordered the black version without speed pockets, so it has 2 pockets I can use for phone and food n stuff.

According to their service rep this suit should be perfect for my speeds of up to 40km/h. The fabric tested good in the wind tunnel for speeds between 35-40km/h. Having a suit with triplines like their Speedsuit and the ones from Velotec only really starts to see some real benefits at 45+ km/h. Also, the Nopinz speedsuit and bioracer TT one are not available with pockets and I NEED pockets.

Can’t wait to put it on and give it a testrun!

Good choice. If you’re interested, there’s some more background on Nopinz here:

On the open road, you’ll never get them to match…being within 1w is amazing.

-More time in the TT would help but it’s also alot on how you feel that day. 95% for ~30min is a good effort, well done!
-Hard to say, but all these are well worth it, you could also DIY a wheel cover for the rear. Velotoze get hot, high top aero socks are easy to use.
-Pacing looks good as I’m not seeing a significant delta in speed, well done.

I did one tt last year, very close to 10 miles. Was on my Cannondale Synapse. Very windy day. Auwful tarmac (like almost always in Quebec). Managed to finish second in my category. This how my effort look like (my FTP was probably closer to 350) :

An update on how things are progressing:

I got the Conti GP5000 and latex tubes mounted and my Nopinz road suit arrived.
Currently in in the last week of SusPB LV, but the weather was close to perfect so I decided to try out a 100km (60 mile) TT. Never done one this long before, so I paced it conservatively. My goal was to complete the 100km in under 3 hours.

Somehow my HR decoupling ended up negative

Super happy I nailed it and well above goal pace. Picked up the power a bit in the last hour, but I didn’t fully empty the tank. Still need some energy to finish the last week of SusPB. Plenty room left to go faster. Ideally shooting for closer to 0.8 IF next time.

This result tells me the tires and suit help a ton! Extrapolating this to around the same effort as my 10 mile tt I’d expect to get over 37 kph average:
In general a 10% increase in speed requires a 23% increase in power. 192W x 1.23 = 236W which is just a couple watts below my 10 mile effort, would lead to a 34.2 x 1.1 = 37.6 kph (23.3mph). So @hvvelo, looks like you were about right in your predictions. Though I still need to put this into practise ofc. A proper TT helmet would probably also add some speed, but not gonna invest into that atm.

Great ride and STILL plenty of meat left on the bone. I think you’re going to shatter that 10 mile effort mark.

Haha, I like how you skipped the 10 and went straight for 60!

Some more 10 mile data … Finally got to run a completely flat course out and back with u turn - road bike w/redshift @280W came out at 23:01 for 26.1 mph. It was all time power PR for me at that duration, even topping out of saddle climb efforts, so spending time in position has clearly helped. Had one downtube bottle, soft top tube bag, P09 helmet.

Really happy with the result for not being an aero bike (2013 entry level madone) - thinking maybe I will try tweaking position a tad lower and get an aero bottle on downtube next to see if I can pick up any further gains from that.

Keep us posted on your progress and things you find that help!

A bit late to the party here but the three biggest things that can help:

Clip-on aero bars
TT helmet
Skinsuit
Tyres/tubes

That’s where you’re biggest bang for your buck will be found. The more expensive upgrades (TT bike/wheels) will make you faster, but the margin of gains won’t be as much as those cheaper options.

There are things you can do to make yourself as aero as possible such as paying attention to not having pockets (or race numbers!!) flapping about. Why go to the trouble of getting aero then attack a sail. If you need to carry things, think of the most aero way of doing so - eg minimal essential spares in a saddle bag rather than pockets or top tube bag.
