Midwest Events for *2025*

Snow Angel Fat Bike Race was fun. The snow cover was good, the course was groomed perfectly and it runs through a really nice golf course. The music and food at the clubhouse were good too. I will do it again.

I was planning on doing the 100 mile version of the Rode to H-ll, but I found out that they no longer offer that distance. What would a good Fall gravel century be?

Lowell Classic has 100 miler….

Nah, west side. But it’s only a 2 hour drive.

Thanks. Gravel Grinder Nationals was moved from VA to IN. It’s June 28th, which is much earlier than is ideal for me, but I signed up. Regarding preparation, I did tell my wife which suit I want to be buried in (just kidding). I will need to get some miles in my legs, but now that the weather is improving I will do some longer rides outside.

Not hear to debate what is / isn’t Midwest but in that general region what tires are ppl running for spring classics? Ie Rough Road 100, Barry etc?

I know the whole wider is better argument but is a 32 GP5000 still the rec for something that is mostly road with a bit of light gravel? Or are ppl going to 35,38,40 now?

For RR 100 (assuming the weather is decent), I’m gonna run my pathfinder 47’s on the Alex rims I mentioned in the other thread…after that, I’ll mount the TB for the season / main races of the year on the Enve wheels and my Thunderos on the Alex wheels.

I have been running 35’s that would blow out to 39mm for the last 3-years, this year I moved to a 40 that blows out to a 43mm. This is also the limit on my bike.

I honestly think a 40-44mm tire will almost cover most race events in our area, tread style is more personal. I think generally speaking in our area, if you need more than a 44mm you may as well bring a MTB that has more gearing.

Rough Road 100 is barely a gravel race. If it is dry, and you want to be competitive, I think the 32 GP5000 set up tubeless is the right setup.

Big River Gravel has their 1st of 4 races on 3/22. Hell Of The Wind. their races are well structured and run with awesome atmosphere at the end with beverages and Casey’s pizza for everyone.

Anyone here done the RAMBA 24 hour or the Wausau 24?

I have done Wausau twice, and am registered again this summer. It is a great event.

Any Barry-Roubaix experiences they want to share?

I can share a brief recap for the 36-miler.

  • Got to line early was 10th row back
  • Was able to be 5th wheel in the race before Cook Road
  • Rolled the sisters as best I could only fading back a little
  • Fell off after the brutal attacks on gun lake (BR Gun Lake Hill Strava segment)
  • Pulled the group back to the front group on the down hill by hastings/duffy road.
  • Did not make the move on Sager
  • Tried to recover (did by end of Sager)
  • Road with a nice big group the the finished
  • Got a PR for the course (not sure if course was fast or not, I know my weight is down and setup is faster)

That is the basics, that said - the race didn’t seem as sketchy as last year but I focused on staying at the front and riding with priority. I did have (2) could have been bad situations where one rider feel on me after rubbing wheels with someone next to him, but I was able to keep us both up and the other situation was about 2 miles out coming into the finish I got pinched hard between two people and then a few second later someone shot off to the left having to put a foot out.

Did the 100 this year, an hour faster than last. Course was faster (except the sand on Deep Lake Road was a bit worse.) I did about 25w more NP and AVG than last year, and now I’m only ~25 min off mug pace. With a good course, next year could be my year.

The 100 is really becoming one of my fav midwest races behind Lumberjack.

So many crashes this year, and this dude just randomly cut a tree down into riders? WTF.

WTF?! That looks totally intentional. Or just massive stupidity. Another bullet point on my list of reasons not to do this race.

Did someone cut a very small tree down in front of a group of riders?
