Iam living in a flat area but like to train for more fatique resistance for long climbs. This year i have 3 grandfondo goals (with long climbs). Last week i had a trainingscamp on Mallorca and there i can make longer climbs after burning (for example) 3000kj but in my own area it is not possible to do that…
What do you think about the following idea. First i start with riding 3 hours Z2 with some SST and when i come back home, i go directly on my indoor trainer for a climb on Zwift (Ven-Top or Alp). Do you think this is a good idea?
I do it all outside, with the ‘climbs’ riding into a headwind. In the winter I have slow tires, and low temperatures make it easy to do long climbing simulation rides even without a headwind.
I live in a flat area (east of England), I have done a few hilly Gran Fondos over the years, including the Mallorca 312. Don’t worry about it too much just develop the power (ride faster on the flats), its the same power, you just go slower for it in the hills.
Do the 3 - 4 hours then ride 4x 2.5 minutes at 92 - 98% of Threshold or 5x 2 minutes (half the time for the rest intervals.) Outside or in doesn’t matter.
PS. It doesnt have to be long, 10 - 15 minutes of hard effort near threshold is plenty after 4hrs
