Leg power imbalance and singled sided power meters

Something to watch out for is single total measurement meters like a Quarq spider are giving an estimated L/R balance that might not be right.

I just found out from Assioma dual pedals that I have 60/40 L/R, that should be a real measurement from each side measured individually. Vs Quarq estimate gives me 53/47.

I was using stages left side previously so my power was inflated by (2*60=120)/100, pretty massive drop in power now measuring it accurately. Not sure if I should try to fix the imbalance or how much benefit that would be, my left leg is longer.

I always wonder how one knows that both pedals are reading equally. If the pedals have a 2% accuracy spec, one could read 2% and the other could read 2% low and still be in spec.

That’s why it’s not worth bothering about small imbalances. Larger ones are only an issue with single sided PM’s if the imbalance varies with intensity, fatigue, cadence. I have an average 55/45 but at Threshold+ it’s 50/50. It’s also cancelled be 53/47 on some easier rides. It drove me crazy trying to match up a single sided one with my turbo before I knew about imbalances a few years ago.
