Left only Stages Power Meter

In a race yesterday my LR Stages PM started acts like it was uncalibrated. That is, cruising on a flat had zero watts and my second trip up a 20% pitch had significantly less watts than the first time. Being a 6 hour MTB race I paused on smooth section to recalibrate. Sure enough the offset was now 608 whereas at the start of the race about 90 minutes before it was 723.
It is 2013 vintage and this I think is the first time. Any other Stages users experienced this drift?

Maybe you have/had a low battery? I have stages Gen3, and I’ve found that anytime it starts to act funny, the battery is almost dead.

I guess I’m so used to only two states, dead battery or fresh I hadn’t considered “almost” dead. I certainly don’t get the claimed battery lifetime so I buy the coin batteries in bulk.

Recently my Gen 2 freaked out.

I went outside and did the zero offset like I usually do before every ride. I did notice that the offset value was a bit off compared to normal, but thought nothing of it.

Started the ride and I noted some further odd behavior - some dropouts and higher than usual wattage. I carried on riding and zeroed again a couple of times mid-ride. The offset values got more freaky and my power just kept getting higher. I finished a 2h ride with average power of 421w and TSS of 597 :joy: The ride was duly omitted from my stats.

My stages is 3y old and I just assumed it had died. However, during my investigation, I opened the battery compartment and it was damp, with a little corrosion on the battery. Couldn’t tell if the damp was water or battery leakage. My previous ride had some rain and maybe the o ring allowed some water to get in, causing the problem? Maybe it was a bad battery? Who knows.

I dumped the bad battery, dried and cleaned out the battery compartment. Then let the pm dry out completely. Installed a new o-ring and new battery and everything is back to normal. Happy days.
