JOIN cycling app

Got an answer, Android workout player coming is coming very soon

When join gives me the range of power values for a workout I set the trainer to the lowest of the interval values then increase it throughout the workout depending on how I’m feeling.

@carytb That’s a neat approach!

I rarely use erg mode but thats good advice.
Living in Florida and the heat during august (even today) makes RPE a little higher. For me threshold efforts in 95% humidity and 95+ temps can be rough. By the time I get used to the heat, it starts cooling down

Anyone elses erg toggle not work? Mine stays in erg mode 100% of the time. Also…there doesnt appear to be a button anywhere for a trainer calibration…

For anybody interested (n=1 and all that). JOIN finally prompted me to do a FTP test today.

Before the test:

  • My FTP was set to 219w on both JOIN and TrainerRoad
  • JOIN’s FTP estimate was 238w
  • TrainerRoad’s AI FTP estimate was 217w (NOTE: I had been inconsistent with rating the difficulty of my workouts on TrainerRoad and all the progression levels had deteriorated to 1, so not much for AI FTP to work with …)

I took the TR ramp test since I have done that many times in the past. The highest I have ever gotten on the ramp test was 233w (March 2022)

After the test:

  • JOIN analyzed the ramp test and gave me a result of 233w
  • TrainerRoad analyzed the ramp test and gave me a result of 242w

Wait…same test, and the 2 companies had different results based on it?

Not sure how to numbers are formed. In TR it’s just 75% of your highest 1min power. Think Join uses some sort of algorithm to determine FTP based on more then just the last workout.

Yes. Intervals.icu sent me a message saying my FTP is now 244w :person_shrugging:

All based on the same ramp test/ride

Where in Florida do you live? Hopefully you weren’t affect by the hurricane.

I picked up cycling while in Tampa and definitely understand the heat and humidity thing. Only down side is that I think biking below 65F is cold.

I live in Martin county which is on the southeastern side.
The starting point of Kings Road, cross florida gravel ride had about 10 to 12 feet of storm surge. I’m waiting to hear back from my Airbnb that is right next to the water. I saw a video of a restaurant in next to where the Airbnb is, had water up to the roof!
I just hope everyone is OK out there.

@creimer Which feels more “right” to you?

Intervals.icu bases your FTP on a maximum effort in the 3 - 12 minute range. It finds a power curve (from a set of pre-defined curves) that matches that effort, and takes the FTP from the curve.

Join always over-estimated my FTP when I was on the FTP builder plan, soninteresting to see that yours actually was higher!

when you are rested why not try the Empirical cycling test to see what that gives you

I’ve seen a couple things where the Join guys say they do not like Ramp Tests and prefer the 20 min tests. This could be why.

I think you’re not getting much feedback on the Join Player because most of us aren’t using it.

As an example, I send my Join plan to TP and then it feeds TR, Zwift, and GC. I actually haven’t done a Join workout in TR yet because I do all my workouts on Zwift or outdoors.

Indeed. I think it would be very interesting to see the statistics on how many people do the JOIN workouts on their player, how many download, how many push to TP, how many push to GC.

Yea that’s what I had been doing (outdoor workouts with join), but wife is in Greece and I’m home with the 9 yr okd, so it’s trainer season for 10 days lol

I figured out the strava thing…it was indeed a separate, 2nd pairing sequence with strava. The erg toggle on Join doesnt seem to do anything though.

Is there any way to change the plan?

You can change to any other plan at any point by going into “Today’s training”, selecting the three dots at the top right of the screen, and going to “View/change goal”. It will show you your current plan with a “CHANGE GOAL” button to change it.

If you mean can you adjust your existing plan in some way - the only methods are by changing your time, shuffling workouts, or manually choosing workouts.
