Is this carbon rim cracked (marketplace seller)

Just trying to buy this second hand bike and from the photos there seems to be lot of scuff marks on the rim?

I can’t tell if it’s cracked but clearly run through something, like a sidewalk curb. Have you asked the seller for more details and photos around this?

He just said the rims were bought secondhand and it was used by his wife. Some close up photos he sent and it has a nail hole

One easy way of telling if a carbon product is cracked is to lightly tap on it with a coin. You will hear a distinctly different sound from the area that’s affected; dull and dampened compared to an unaffected area. This, of course, means you must have access to them. I would not trust my eyes solely.

I personally feel you should value the wheels at $0 and enter negotiations that way. Too risky.

If the bottom of the bead breaks out, well, it’ll probably be painful…

Hard pass…

Those wheels are trash. I’d assume the rest of the bike is like that. I’ve personally never treated any of my equipment like that. One ding like that is an accident but those rims have a hundred plus a hole in them.

That looks like a drainhole to me, but it’s in the wrong spot. It is round. Maybe it’s a welding defect where the rim is joined.
That’s an EA70 SL rim - that’s an Aluminum rim. It might have a carbon-ish faring on the AL rim. In any case, those wheels are done. They’re beat up and the brake track is a mess.

Edit: That’s a disc brake wheelset??? I was thrown off by the brake track. I bet someone tried to use it as a rim brake wheel. Here’s one on TPC with the same drain hole. It’s fine, just remove all the stickers. Easton EA70 SL Aluminum Tubeless 700c Wheelset | The Pro's Closet
