Ideal Wheel Rim Width for 45-50MM Gravel Tires

JoeriN,

I went with the 24-spoke combination on my wheelset. I sent you a PM.

Do any of you use 40-42 WAM tires on such rims and have comments on them? I’m contemplating the pro one 38, as that’s a big fast road tire

I run 38mm Panaracer Gravel King SS on the Light Bicycle WG44 rim at ~30psi on road and its quite nice. They measure out to ~41.5mm. Compared to LB AR46 (21mm internal) with 28mm GP5000, it is more comfortable. Interestingly, back of napkin math, both the 38mm + WG44 and 28mm + AR46 are similar “aero”. This is over a small sample of same route rides where I compared average speed squared over normalized power. So very approximate, avg speed ~16mph (maybe difference at higher speeds?) and not sure if correct math but just for fun. It does feel just as fast so I don’t bother swapping in the 28mm wheels anymore

Another note, compared to the 38mm on 19mm internal, I don’t hear wind buffeting at high speeds anymore so I think the wider rim width is helping

Last summer I ran a 42mm Pathfinder on my Nextie AGX45 NXT wheels with 29mm internal width and 40mm external width. They stretched out to ±46mm and really liked how they felt on the groads in Girona at 1.85 bar in the front and 1.95 bar in the rear. Still quite fast on asphalt as well.

Any others happy with Pathfinders on that wide rims? I’ve hear other people saying otherwise…

I have been fine with my wide rim setup and the 42mm S-Works Pathfinders (47 as measured) but I am also a gravel newbie and don’t have any comparables.
