How to adjust work out when hot?

My heart rate get so elevated when it’s hot inside during summer, say 30 degrees C. My heart rate can be elevated by as much as 15 beats for a given power. Should I adjust the power so my heart rate match when it’s 10 degrees colder or what. It can be so much as 20% lower power to get heart rate down. Or should I go somewhere in between?

Hey there,

Welcome to the forum!

This is a good question!

Generally, I recommend following power targets for workouts from Zone 3 and above, but you can use HR data as the driver in Zone 2 and below.

If you’re doing a hard workout and you’re able to hit the power targets without too much trouble, I’d personally ignore HR and go off of power.

Obviously, if it’s hot enough that you’re struggling to complete a workout with quality, it’s best to either dial back the intensity or switch to an endurance ride for the day.

If you’re on a Z2 ride, it’s perfectly acceptable to use HR instead of power, especially when heat is driving your HR up higher than normal.
