We demand an update!
Race is this weekend.
I have a question for you guys.
Nutrition and hydration is an issue. I am going alone. They have designated feed areas but a family or friend has to give you bottles which I don’t have. I put a 2nd cage on the bike but I doubt I’m allowed BTS. So I can either do all 3-4 hrs (65miles) with 2 bottles or ???
How are people dealing with this? I can always pack nutrition in my jersey pockets. But 2 bottles of water is nothing for that long of a ride.
3rd bottle in your middle jersey pocket. I usually do that for long(er) road races with ambiguous feed rules.
Keep us posted
@Alen driving up there now, myself. Id throw one in the middle jersey pocket if you feel the need to. I’m personally just bringing two bottles ( both with mix inside ) and about 5 gels and 1 waffle for each road race.
You can probably make it on 2 bottles but - I have seen people drop bottles during races so, “2 is 1, 1 is none” as the saying goes One in the jersey pocket is worth considering.
Even in a short race where 1 bottle is enough I’ll sometimes take 2 half full ones just to assure I don’t end up with zero.
I have manged 100 miles on two bottles, you can normally pick up drink rolling through a feed zone and drop it before leaving the feed zone… some riders will pass on a drink grabbed in a feed zone to others in the group they are in, especially if they want you to work with them (before Covid). Might be different in the US though.
Good luck
Another week until I can start racing and I cannot wait!
Water is always a challenge in long road races but I would focus on the likely duration rather than distance. I don’t know the terrain for your race but I’d normally expect 65miles to be c.2.5 hours. So long as you’ve been drinking enough for the last 24hrs you should be alright in that long a race. If you’re concerned or it’s hot then extra large bottles or an extra bottle in the middle pocket is your best bet.
Needing someone to bottle is such a pain in road racing. My races are a minimum of 120km up to 200km (75-125miles) and it’s quite a burden to persuade someone to stand by the side of the road for 3-5 hours just to hand me a bottle.
Is this still your first race?
I would just go the two bottles. The first race I I did, I spent all my mental energy assessing where I was in the pack and could hardly drink.
Obviously you should drink in a 65 mile race, but if this is your first race, keep your hands on your bars is priority. It’s dangerous for other riders if you’re mid pack and drop a bottle.
Results for day 1 are in.
That’s a lot of DNF’s.
Looking at those times, it was a sizeable bunch finish.
Let’s hope not due to crashes from novice riders…
After watching a Claudio Marquez video the other day, I do worry.
Also notable that there is an “Alen” listed in the DNF list…
I noticed that. If this was 65 miles that was 24.4 mph average for 2hr 40 for the win.
Sooooo what happened to OP? Seems like he DNF
