Hello I have just fractured my femur

Hi all,

Not sure if this forum is still active. I’m 30 years old and broke my femur neck last summer while cycling in the beautiful hills of Tuscany while on holidays (originally from The Netherlands). Got surgery in Italy and they fixed me up with 3 cannulated screws right into the head of the femur. Now I am 16 weeks post operation, and 10 weeks load bearing/excersising. Back to work and ‘normal life’ also on the bike. I still feel my mobility is quite reduced in the injured leg and while doing stretches I notice pain in the groin area. My fysiotherapist tells me I should not worry too much until half a year post op, however I am a bit concerned about the possibility of AVN (although my fracture was not severely displaced and doctors tell me not to worry). How long have you guys been experiencing groin discomfort and how many months post-op did you feel fully recovered?

Im hoping to ride Liege-Bastogne-Liege next year April, and want to start more heavy training soon…

Thanks for all your experiences btw, helped me a lot while being in the hospital!

Regards,

Thomas

How goes the recovery Thomas?

I’m just under 4 weeks post op, broken femur + forearm. I was lucky the crash occurred during the hospital two-for-one surgery special.

I was able to weight bear the next day, I guess it depends on the type and severity of the fracture how long until you can weight bear. Walking with a crutch (on the unbroken arm) and trying to work in some cane time but still very wobbly. PT is ongoing and I can’t wait to hop on a stationary again.

I’m trying to apply everything I’ve learned about recovery to my day to day as it’s very slow gains and the pain a good reminder to slow down & back off. Some great advice in this thread and thank you to everyone who has contributed their experiences.

Hi Bobby,

Well, it’s more than a year after the crash, and a lot has happened. After the surgery and non weight bearing for 7 weeks, I started to recover and doing PT. Unfortunately around december, my recovery did not improver further and we took more xrays. Head of the femur didn’t look good, so after additional CT they concluded I was suffering from avascular necrosis and my femur head was dying. Only option was a full hip replacement, which took place in July. Currently I’m feeling good and just finished my PT. Wasn’t expecting THR on the age of 30, but it is what it is..

Hope you can start weight bearing soon and that your recovery goes well!
